Great idea! You could paint pumpkins or have the kids decorate their treat bags.
As for dinner... I would do something super simple that is easily kept warm. Some kind of crockpot meal would be easy and tasty.
We are doing a trunk or treat for our small community. Sounds pretty straightforward but any ideas to make it fun would be great. We are also going to do an easy dinner and some games or crafts. The ages are about 3 to 11. Mabey about 20-25 kids. We are going to try to do it outside if weather permits, otherwise we will move other activities inside after trunk or treating. Any ideas would be great. Thanks!!

Please explain what a "trunk or treat" party is.
We are in the process of planning our for church as well and here's the list of games that we came up with as possibilities. We are doing it carnival style so some of the activities are little more involved than others.
Cupcake wall
bean bag toss
Musical chair style Pumpkin Passing Game
Candy Corn Relay Race
Coffin head tossing game
Magnetic fishing game
Pumpkin Bowling
Halloween Mini Golf game
PLINKO style Halloween prize board
Decorate sugar cookies
Make construction paper pumpkins
paint pumpkins
Mad Science lab- make playdoh or slime
Ring Toss
Floor tic tac toe
Potato sack race
mummy leg 3-legged race
pumpkin b/t the leg race
We are also having someone take pictures of all the families and kids in costumes. If you need prizes, check out www.orientaltrading.com
Good luck! I'll definitely be checking back for more ideas.
For food cut hot dogs in to bite size lengths and poke raw spagetti into one end then when you boil them to cook they come out like baby squid. My son has a lot of fun with these. Also look up Turtle burgers. they are cheese burgers with bacon woven to be a shell and hot dogs for legs head and tail. The pictures I found look almost too cute to eat.
Sorry--don't know what "trunk or treat" is.
Oh I LOVE our trunk or treats! Try to get the people who are handing the candy out of their trunks to decorate their cars and themselves, put decorations beside the car, etc, dress up their kids, pets, etc. The more decorated, the better. The kids love to see that almost as much as they love to get the candy.
We usually do the simple hot dogs, hot chocolate, chips dinner.
A big hit with most kids is the train ride we do in the parking lot, so maybe something like that. Even a hayride.
GL and have fun. I am so thankful our community does this as we are very rural and trick or treating is difficult when you have to drive miles between houses.
We've done one in the past. Each car had a "game" to play along with the treats. Our game was bobbing for apples. BUT, it wasn't the traditional way. We tied a heavy string from our passenger rear view mirror to the driver's mirror of the car next to us. We threaded string through the core of the apple, then tied the string onto the cross string. Then, as the kids came through, the had to keep their hands behind their back and try to eat the apple. It was fun & funny to watch the kids come up with their own way of getting the apple.
Another car had a donught machine set up next to it. Another had a popcorn machine. One truck had it's tailgate down and had a big black pot of "witch's brew" bubbling in it. (The witch's brew was apple juice with dry ice in it.) There was also a "fishing pond", a picture station (family pictures plus some cardboard painted as different characters with holes cut out for people's faces), pumpkin decorating (mini pumpkins with sticky foam shapes & markers) and the last two trucks were parked close together and on their tailgates were crockpots full of chili, chicken soup, and tortilla soup. There were rolls and butter to go with it. It was a really fun event. It took lots of planning and effort, but we had a blast! Good luck & enjoy it!

to answer the first two- a trunk or treat is this: instead of taking your kids around the neighborhood trick or treating a group(about 10 + families) will get together and decorate the trunks of their cars and the kids will go from car trunk to car trunk with their bags "trunk" or treating. We usually did it at a church parking lot with those handing out candy parking in one area away from other cars. We also had games for the kids like the fishing game(where someone ties a prize to the string) bean bag toss, cake walk and a pot luck dinner and a costume parade before the trunk or treat. It was always a lot of fun.
Try the family fun website for some fun crafts and games- you can search by age and/or by holiday. They always have a lot of great ideas there!
Have fun!

Our city does trunk or treat also. We still do trick or treating too (just for the fact that its tradition to go out with my family) but my son LOVES truck or treating. Our city does it in the city parking garage near city hall. This way, no matter what the weather, the kids stay relatively warm and dry. They also have a specific start point and end point so that avoids chaos. At the end point there is pizza, hot dogs, doughnuts and warm cider.
As one previous poster suggested, have the cars decorated and those passing out candy dress up. In our city, even the Mayor has a car decorated and dresses up. He even dresses up his dog.
Its a great way to have a trick or treating Halloween without going door to door to stangers houses. Have fun!
