Hang Nails

My ten month old daughter has chronic hang nails on her big toes. At least I think that is what it is. A little piece of skin and sometimes the nail comes apart from her toes, and it is barely attached at the bottom corner of her toe. It doesn't seem to bother her any. She'd be happy if I let her little nails grow into talons. But is this something that is common amongst all babies or should I take her to the doctor?

What can I do next?

If it isn't bothering her you can just want until her next check up. Both of my boys have weird toenails and I just assume they will grow out of it.

Hi H.,

My kids use to get them all of the time and its been awhile but I remember that I trimmed them down until I took them to the doctor. I also remember that if it didn't look like it was to far down in the skin I would take the nail clipper and pull them out it didn't hurt them. But you have to becareful on how you trim them so they don't get an ingrown toe nail. The next time you take your daughter to the doctor I would ask..

Hi H.,

My daughter had iron deficiency when she was around that age and she had frequent hang nails. Don't know if they are directly related, but I would recommend having her ped perform a finger prick to check her iron levels. Is your daughter eating solids readily? My daughter doesn't like to eat meat or citrus fruits much either. She just started eating more fruit recently. It could also be a protein or Vitamin C deficiency.

My son did that for awhile, it was also his thumbnail. I did take him to the Dr. and he said it was probably just from him biting on them. I did notice that's what he was doing, like when he'd wake up and was alone in his crib or in the car seat if he didn't have shoes on. I just kept socks on him. It didn't seem to bother him at all, just me!
