My sister pops hers all of the time (for the last 15 years or more). Its only painful on occasion though. I think when it has been painful she goes to a chiropractor.
About 2 months ago, I was stretching and felt a pop in my sternum area. It was very painful, red and swollen for about 2 days. My doctor sent me to see a orthopedic doctor who sent me to PT. I thought the PT was working, but for the past week I've experienced more discomfort, pain and popping in that area again. Needless to say, I am concerned and scared that this may be something more serious, but I haven't been able to find a doctor who's familiar with these symptoms. Has anyone experienced this for themselves or do you know of someone that has and has been successful at getting help? Thanks so much in advance for your time!

This may not be the same thing at all, but sometimes my chest hurts in the sternum area... sometimes it feels like heartburn. Either way it's a very sharp pain. Anyway, when that happens it's usually because my back is out. Maybe go to a chiropractor and see if that helps...
I pop that all the time and never thought anything of it..?? I only have pain until I pop. So I'm curious to see what you find out.
Is your PT a sports PT? Are you seeing a sports doctor? You may try one of those, as they may have more experience in that area with injuries, etc.
hi
have you tried a chiropractor? combined with massage usually works best for me.
Hey, T. -
About two years ago this happened to me - really hurt the first several times. The nice part is that now it doesn't hurt at all; that said, my chest pops every day now. At this point it's like the feeling of needing to crack your knuckles - a bit of built-up pressure.
I remember that scared feeling, though - was awful at first.
After a while, I was able to just arch my back a bit, leaning back and it would pop into place again. Give it some time - the painful part should subside.
I actually did see a chiro. and it helped a bit. If you're anywhere near Boulder, I can let you know where I went: $20 a visit, no other fees involved.
If you have any questions, let me know.
Best,
S.
I have it happen to me quite often but only after I had been in a car accident. Especially if I overexert myself I experience pain but at other times too, if I make a quick harsh move, lift or carry things that are too heavy or even stretching. The chiropractor works wonders for me and I feel amazing through out my whole body after an adjustment not just in the sternum. Good luck!
I would go to your doctor and ask if you can have an x-ray or CT scan. My sister was in a car accident and her doctor at the time told her she had whip lash-she asked for a CT and they said no. She was not happy with this. Even though she had an HMO she went to another doc out of her insurance coverage. They did the CT and found out she had a broke C2 vertebrae. Well it was fractured and they told her if it had broken anymore she could have been paralyzed. Which is crazy because her doctor was moving her neck around a lot. This was years ago and I am not saying something this serious would happen with you, but I would ask if you can have an x-ray. Good luck!
Hi,
I have never experienced pain yet my sternum pops all of the time. As if a knee or other joint would pop. It usually happens after i lay on my side while working on my computer and propped up on one elbow. I get up and pull my arms back and hear it. I never thought much of it. Let me know if you figure it out.
I had my sternum pop a couple months ago when I was exercising...it was really painful for a couple of weeks. I didn't go to the doctor, but talked about it with my trainer, and according to him, there are joints in that area that can pop, similar to shoulders/knees that pop frequently, and it just takes a little time to heal. The pain is likely because it went a little further than it should have, but as long as the swelling has gone away, it doesn't sound like anything torn or more lasting. I would just take it easy on that area for a few weeks (it does take a while to heal since it's part of your core body function) and see how it is then. Good luck!
