I tried it for migraines and went for about 6 months. I had good results while I was going and for about 3 months after I quit. Then my headaches came back.
If you or anyone you've known has tried acupuncture I'd love to know of your experience. What were you treated for, the results, how many sessions to feel results, costs, and if you know of one in the Houston area you'd recommend I'd appreciate hearing about it all. Thanks so much!

I've used acupuncture twice.
First was for migraines. I was getting them twice a month. I did acupuncture and they were gone for 4 years (I've had 2 in 15 months after birth of my last baby). I think i went for 3 weeks, 6 or 7 sessions. $60 a session.....well worth the money!
Second time was for.morning sickness. I would get to where i couldn't stop throwing up....I'd have a session and be fine for a week or so. I did this while it lasted. I had hyperemisis with my second so this was much better.
Acupuncture is common in Hawaii.
I've used it for both pregnancies because I had BAD morning sickness and migraines with both pregnancies. It was per the suggestion of my OB/GYN. And just one 1/2 hour session, and it stopped.
Very relaxing, does not hurt.
My Hubby has used it for back pain.
I know many people who have used it.
The number of sessions and costs, vary.
Because, it is per YOUR condition or problem. And not everyone is the same. It is not a one sized shoe fits all.
Some medical plans will have coverage for alternative health care. If the providers are affiliated with and approved, by the medical coverage plan provider.
I do acupuncture once a week. I started when I had to go through breast cancer treatment. It prevented any nausea and fatigue that I might have had. I breezed through the treatment and I really think it's because of acupuncture.
I still go weekly for two reasons: 1)continued treatment of side effects of the medication I now have to take and 2) arthritis in my knee. I play tennis almost every day, so I'm banging up my knee pretty well. In the past, I've been in such pain I couldn't even walk. With the once a week acupuncture treatment, I have absolutely no pain and I can play as much tennis as I want. And I STILL have no side-effects from my cancer medication.
My insurance covers acupuncture. But I know he charges $70 per session for non-insurance covered treatments. He's charging me $50 per session until I meet my deductible, then insurance will cover it at 100%.
I know two people who swear they got pregnant only after starting acupuncture on top of whatever they were already trying.
Love acupuncture! I have gone for coughs, fever, headaches, ankle pain. Sometimes I take herbs, sometimes I don't.
Fortunately, there is a community office in my town. This is an office where more than one person is treated at a time. The fees are more affordable as she is able to work on more than one patient every hour.
I've done accupuncture for a number of ailments-
lower back pain
nausea
general malaise
slow digestion.
Sessions have cost between 50-$110 per session, depending on the practitioner. Some insurance carriers cover accupuncture.
I have found it helpful in some regards, not instantly helpful in others.
Hubs tried it too. Sometimes, accupuncture can have unexpected fringe benefits. In his case, he was having a hard time plunging into the ocean/ pool (he found it dreadfully cold). After accupuncture, which he went to for smoking cessation, no such trouble.
Good luck to you and yours,
F. B.
I have done it ! It did work !
I wish i could tell you who to go to. I am in the recent blizzard zone...
I work for an acupuncturist in the Sugar Land area. We have clients that come in weekly for "tune ups" and clients that come in for specific issues.
Our specialty is helping with infertility and treating women going through IUI and IVF procedures. The success rate on these procedures is greatly increased with the use of acupuncture.
I fell down some wooden stairs and could barely use my arm, my shoulder hurt so much. One treatment and I was 100% improved- even I was amazed and I see people every day saying how wonderful they feel.
My teenage daughters get acupuncture when they are sore from soccer. They love it and think it is magic. My youngest used to ask for massages, now she asks for acupuncture.
The needles are very tiny; most of them you don't even feel.
We also have patients who come in for morning sickness- huge help there, migraines, relief from the nausea of cancer treatments, weight loss, stress relief, allergy relief and smoking cessation.
We can't cure everything-sometimes there are underlying issues. Occasionally our practioner has discovered ailments the patient did not know they had.
Depending on what you come in for you may need 1 or 2 visits (for a strain or muscle pain issue) to 8 visits minimum for infertility. Or you might get hooked like many of our patients and just want to keep coming back weekly!
Initial consult rates are $125. and follow up visits are 85. which is pretty normal for the Houston area. We don't file insurance but do give a 10% discount for some insurance companies. We also happily provide insurance receipts with the correct codes if your insurance company covers acupuncture so that you can file yourself. There are also discounted student rates.
Our very informative website is www.mirvacu.com and if we aren't in your area, use www.acufinder.com to find one that is near you.
I went from curious when I started working there 1 1/2 years ago to a true believer now. It's been used longer than Western medicine and truly has value in treating patients.
O! and right now we have 4 of our IVF/IUI patients pregnant with twins!
I tried acupuncture for migraines, it was relaxing, but did not work. I think it's always worth a try, but don't expect a miracle. Good luck, and hope it works for you!
It's wonderful, I've used it for everything! Some things take 1-2 times, some months.
I have and it was awesome! I had a terrible dry cough for over a year. The traditional doctor tried all sorts of things. I would choke, gasp for air.. it was so frustrating.
I went to an acupuncturist/Chinese Medicine person. I explained the situation.. She evaluated me.. She held her hands above my chest but up high like at the base of my neck. and said, "Oooo, it is right here, It is large..." I kind of rolled my eyes to myself and thought, Oh brother, what a flake..
She then mentioned the numbness in my leg and arm.. I had not even mentioned this. So I kind of perked up..
She did the acupuncture.
Went home followed her directions with the drops..
She also told me I needed to take more large breaths. (usually this caused me to cough)
No change, but 2 mornings later while brushing my teeth, I felt this huge pressure in my chest at the base of my neck. I have never felt anything like it. and so I took a deep breath and slowly blew it out. Then a second time as I felt this strange pressure in my throat. on the third breath, this huge amount of air came out and yes, my coughing, almost totally went away..
I continued the drops.. for a year. Then I quit taking them did pretty well, but now a small cough is coming back!!! I need to find her.
When my friend was diagnosed with cancer, she also had treatments through acupuncture. It helped with the pain, the nausea.. Gave her energy.. Her insurance paid for it.
