Hello, my name is Amie and I am addicted to Craigslist! Step 1....admitting your problem - DONE!!!!! ((lol))

Okay ladies, looking for advice regarding craigslist. I am new to the whole thing so I am really wanting some experiences or advice you have to share on this topic. I know the obvious of not giving out too much info, my phone number, address etc.. meeting in a public place with someone else with me. Anything else? Have you created a seperate email account to email people from? I have recently started checking out craigslist for some great deals on wood furniture pieces that I can redo (paint, distress etc..) for my home. For instance, just found this amazing, old, ugly, green wood, 6-drawer "vanity" that I am going to give a facelift and turn it into a wonderful desk for my daughters room. I can't wait...I got it for $45! I'm so excited. Well, now that I found this, I am on a hunt for a few more items that I would like to give a new home and new happy life to. :) I guess I would just like to see what experiences you have had...good or bad...

Thanks.

What can I do next?

I've had good experiences selling children's things on CL. However, my big words of wisdom are to not "hold" any items for anyone. You'll get about a 50/50 rate of people even showing up, so first person who gets there and buys it wins. Be prepared for flakes.

All my experiences were good. I sold a lot and bought a lot. I adopted my doggie from Craigslist and I love her with all my heart. So thankful for that. I am so glad I rescued her because she ended up having heartworms and now we are almost done with her treatment and I feel like I have saved her. She is a completly different dog from the one I picked up two years ago. She is so much more happier.

Look in the "Free" section. I'm always finding hidden gems in the free giveaways. Just be wary of furniture like sofas or chairs b/c it could contain bugs even if it looks okay & 'clean', it may not be. Bugs could be hiding in the fabric or inside the framework. I have used a different email acct when I sell or inquire on craigslist. Since I'm female, I usually have my hubby come w/me when meeting someone to buy or sell. I just feel safer w/him w/me. When you sell something or post you want something, it doesn't show your actual email address, it's a link thru craigslist that gets sent to your email. If you need further clarification on how I mean, just go to craigslist, click on an ad & up at the top of the ad there's a link you can click on for contacting them. That's how it'll look for you. I think you DO have an option to put your own email address on there but I never do. Never fall for scams like "I'm wanting your item for a gift for someone so please let me pay you in large amount..." etc etc. I've had two different replies almost verbatim like that for something I was selling. There was a lot of spelling errors & it just didn't look "right" or legit. Be wary of buyers who want someone else to do the transaction for them like "I have person who will pick up for me, they will give you check for 'X' amount & you give me back the difference..." etc etc. (usually they try to con you into receiving a considerably higher amt than what you want, cash the check & then give them the money. That's a scam if you hadn't already figured that one out) so watch out for replies that you pretty much know it's not right. Glad you found a great bargin. Hope my tips help you, happy shopping & best of luck.

When I lived in the city, I thought craigslist was a MIRACLE! It's still useful here, but seriously not a lot listed (like 8 items listed in the baby/kids section in a day, instead of 5 pages where I used to live, lol).
I have a junk email address that is not my name that I use for all "disposable" stuff, and my real email address that is my name is ONLY for real friends (the ones that don't forward me a bunch of junk all the time, that is). I would always use the junk email address to do stuff like craigslist. Other than that, sounds like you know what to do.
My husband used to call me the craigslist queen, lol. I got a large entertainment center / armoir thing which was really good, had 3 drawers, 5 shelves, and a place for dvd player and cable as well as a big screen TV...got it AND the TV for $100. The TV worked just fine. (I do not buy electronics generally because I don't want to be unpleasantly surprised....but in this case, I was happy to pay $100 for the entertainment center and the TV was just a free bonus). Donated both 4 years later to the guy who helped us move, as it wasn't the right dimensions for our new house. I got a like new graco high chair that I priced the same one at Babies R Us for $60 (sold 2 children later for 25), plus an unopened splat mat for $20. Bumbo seats for $15-20 (and sold later for 20-25). A play kitchen hardly used for $25. A Winnie the Pooh plush chair, a Tigger doll, a Pooh dining set, and placemat (all in the box or with tags---they changed their mind of themes) for $10. Some hard to find bits and pieces for my son's bedroom theme. A ride on train set that goes around the Christmas tree for $20. 3 toyboxes (one full of toys) for $10 each (I later sold 2 for 20 each, one for 30). 2 train tables for $20 each (sold one after he outgrew it for 20). A 7' prelit Christmas tree that was the exact width I wanted, the right tree, with a revolving stand for $40 (yep, it all works). My son's T-shaped bunk beds, with bunkie board, desk and cork bulletin board, dresser, book shelves, headboard for bottom bunk, and 3 drawers beneath the bottom bunk for $80. A coffee table for the playroom, a small tv stand, the list goes on and on.
Never once had an experience with a flake when buying or selling. Well, ONCE I was meeting a man at McDonalds to sell him my toybox. I chose the spot because it was close, populated, and my son could eat nuggets and play on the playground, I could drink a coke and read a book, if he was late. Not too inconvenient. He phoned my cell (I give out my cell when making arrangements to meet, but not my home number) and said he was not going to be able to make it. Asked if I would take it to his work (optometrist office 2 miles down the road) because he wasn't going to get his full lunch break that day. Since it was still a busy shopping strip, I brought it to the office and he gave me an extra $15 tip for delivery.

I suggest using a separate account for this and watching what ads you respond to. Also make sure if you getting anything that says its from craigslist make sure you go directly to the site. I have gotten tons of nice things from there and some pets

Too funny :)
We use Craigslist to find roommates for our son in his apartment, to buy stuff we don't want to buy new, and recently to buy a car for our daughter. We have had to be careful with wierd replies and scams when we post for the apartment; "I live in England, and I want to rent your apartment. I'll send you a check for the rent and my plane ticket. You pay for the ticket." There are variations on that. Just be careful, and have fun with this.

I have purchased and sold a TON of stuff through Craigslist. Weird things, beautiful and junk stuff. .

The only 1 problem I had was a woman who purchased a futon cushion with a custom cover and discovered she did not want it 2 days later..

She admitted there was nothing wrong with it, she had just "changed her mind"???

We told her sorry, no we would not take it back , she should sell it on craigslist like we had done.. We even offered to give her the list of other people that had also wanted it.. She said no, she just wanted her money back. Still told her no.. That night came home and it was on our front porch.

So we held it for a week and kept calling her.. She never came back so we put it in the front yard for free. A young man with a Futon Frame in the back of his truck stopped and asked if it was really free and was thrilled to have it.

Over all everyone has been really great. Even had someone drive all the way from Dallas for a bed we were selling. That was a 6 to 8 hour round trip drive for them!

I have used the site before and will most likely do so again. BUT, the movie about the killer on craigslist was about a woman from my town. She was selling a car and the person wanted to test drive it. He murdered her and they caught him because he used the car to drive to another state...so just be careful and make sure you never give any personal information. Also make sure you meet in very public places and take some friends with you.

Sounds like you have all the right security things thought out. My experiences have all been great. The best was the set of golf clubs that we bought for our daughter. She's really tall so we had to find a men's set. A guy bought a nice set so he could take lessons and hated it.

Don't forget to check the free section regularly. You have to be ready to go immediately as people who put stuff out for free need it gone right away, but if you keep looking, you'll eventually be the first one to respond.

Have fun!

Haven't sold anything on CL - but have bought a few things (car, toy kitchen, outslide climber thing, and a couple of pups!) Have had somebody go with me to each thing except for the kitchen thing as I was kinda racing another person there - and all info on this was in my phone as well as on puter!

I haven't really bought very much on Craigslist.....my husband does and has had pretty good experiences. I've sold a fair amount of stuff and I completely agree with the previous poster who said do not HOLD any items. Put in your ads that it is first come, first serve.

I do have a separate email account for this kind of stuff though.

Good Luck....I've gotten myself addicted to Pinterest and I have a bunch of ideas of furniture, etc. to try and re-purpose! I may be hitting Craigslist soon myself!
