J.K.
My daughter had one on the back of her head and I was just like you, the doctor said nothing to worry about unless it got the size of a quarter. Lymp nodes are like little trash cans with filters I guess.
Last friday I discovered a bump on my son's head down towards the ear. WHich felt like the size of a pea and was hard and not moveable. Then I discovered he had anouther small bump beside it and two more small ones on his neck. The small ones were moveable and had a rubbery texture. When I took him to the dr. yesterday his nurse said it is probablable lymph nodes caused by an infection and the dr would probably put him on antibiotics. When the dr came in he said it is lymph nodes nothing to worry about and left the room. Am I crazy or should have he went a little more into detail about what they are and how long they will be their and so on. As a mom I was scared to death and him comming in for less than a minute and leaving I had not time to even ask a question. Has anyone else had this on their child or can give me a little more detail. Thanks.

The lumps are fine. They are just saying that they are there. My son has them. My sister that is a NP says that they are not to worry about unless they are bothersome. In other words if they start itching or burning then you need to have the doctor check them out.
I have 3 children 6,5, and almost 3 and about 2 winters ago my 2 youngest ones had strep throat and they were very sick, but myoldest had signs ad symptoms of it but the infection drained into her lymph nodes and the doctor said i needed to watch them because if it is there longer thatn a week that is a big concern because it should have drained out b then, and if not they will have to go in there and manually get it out because it is not safe for her. So i suggest for you to just watch it and if it does not go away take him back to his doctor and let him know that you know it should have been gone in a week and that he needs to do something before it jeopardizes you sons health ad well being. I also work in the medical field and i have had to care for a little boy that was about 2 or 3 years old and he had surgery on his lymoh nodes because his infection never left like it was supposed to and he got reaslly sick and he was in bad condition until that infection was removed from there. After that he was just fine, and he healed fast and went home a normal happy healthy kid.
My 2 year old son has had those since he was a small baby. My doctor told me that he is fine and it is normal. He seems to be a perfectly healthy little boy so I'm not going to worry about. I did find there is a lot of information on line about this, so it may help you feel better to get all of the information you can about it.

As a nurse I just wanted to tell you that most enlarged lymph nodes are nothing to worry about as long as they do not change in size, become painful or if they become nonmobile. However I am also a mom. My son has had an enlarged lymph node on the right side of his neck since he was 6 weeks old and he is almost 2. I also worried for a while and went to a specialist for reasurance after our pediatrician and family docotor blew it off as nothing. It of course was nothing!!! But if you are concerned it does not hurt to get someone else to look too. Main thing is if it changes characteristics do insist on the doctor looking more in to it. Most kids will off and on have enlarged lymph nodes with sickness.
P.S. We went just this week to an ENT for possible ears tubes because of ear infections. First thing the doctor said was "OH, he has and enlarged lymph node, it is nothing to worry about." Once again I was releived to here it again!!
I had the exact same thing happen with my son who is now 8. He still has the lump in his neck and he says its his friend. I think its just part of him now so he knows its there. Doctors all brush me off, but the last doctor we had in St Louis, I finally bawled and asked her to please run tests. I didn't want to wake up one day and find out he has leukemia and they could have caught it sooner. So to appease me she ran blood tests which all came back fine. I don't know what the lump is. I had a non cancerous lump in my breast when mine were growing and when I was 21 I went to the doctor who suggested I have it removed. I wonder if that's what his thing is. But because it hasn't attached to anything in his neck they aren't worried.
First of all.....Can you pick a different Doctor? I am thinking that he is not attending to your needs. I want more time with my Doctor than that. Or at least the nurse.
Lymph nodes are basically glands that are suppose to help the body with infection. Your son may have allergies or an ear infection and the lymph nodes became inflamed or infected trying to fight it off. The antibiotic will help but maybe your son also needs allergy medication or he may be right back to swollen lymph nodes again. Some times Doctors forget that we are people with needs. I love the Doctor that I take my girls to. Dr David Chorley in Sandsprings. He is funny and the girls love him. He always answers my questions and take time with my girls. I would look for a different doctor.
Might have been nice if the ped had explained about them a little better to you, but lymph nodes are very common and harmless. Lymph nodes are part of the body's immune system, and can swell if you've been exposed to an allergin, virus, or bacteria - very common to have several appear on the side and back of the head and neck during cold and flu season. When you visit your doctor with a cold, flu, or sickness, I bet the doc feels your neck around your jaw - feeling for lymph nodes - they are very prominant on our kids. they can also just swell due to an irritation - something as simple as sleeping on one side at night and rubbing your head on the mattress. You'll see them come and go.
