Help! My Bathroom Stinks

I have two boys (7 and 2.5) and a husband. My bathroom stinks of stale urine. Gross I know. I've cleaned every part of the toilet I can think of. Cleaned the floor and wash the carpet and the smell won't go away. I have an air freshener in there too. It doesn't help that the toilet is in the same small place as the shower. My husband likes to take very hot showers and there is a lot of moisture in the room. I leave the fan on to help with that but I think it magnafies the stink. Does anyone have anysuggestions of how to get rid of the smell?

P.S. I don't have carpet, I have a throw rug that fits aroud the base of toilet and wash it weekly.

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all the responses. Great suggestions. The humor brightened my stressfull day too. :-) I will try all your suggestions and let you know how it turns out. I like the idea of wiping everything down with vinager. I don't think the boys are spraying the walls (I will wash them though) but I frequently have to take the toilet seat off to clean under the bolts. Maybe I'm just not doing it frequently enough. Yucky job...never on the top of my to-do list.

Oh my gosh! I took a black light into the bathroom and boy was I surprised (and a bit grossed out). It really works and I found some new places that need cleaning. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I agree with Tania and Laurie,
I just wanted to add that you should have your husband and kids help you do this job, after all they are part of the problem and they will understand better how important is to try to keep it clean.

I had the same problem, I cleaned the floor, toilet, walls, and throw rugs many times. Finally I was down on my hands and knees sniffing the floor (I know gross, but I was determined to find the culprit). My search ended at the toilet bowl brush - It reaked! I threw it out and got a new one and my bathroom smells great now. If only I could figure out how to get the boys to keep their pee in the toilet now :)

Wash down the walls with bleach and water.. there is probably pee on them too.. I would consider pulling up the carpet and putting in tile.. It is hard to keep carpet fresh with all of that moisture in there..

Also you can purchase "Damp Rid".. It is where the cleanser are sold sometimes in the closet organizing section.. It will help totally dry out the bathroom.

My daughter has had the same issue. Have you washed the walls and maybe the shower curtain? Getting boys to aim correctly is a challange when they are small...even them husbands need alittle reminder from time to time. Good luck.

Ewww...I didn't even notice that you had carpet. Sprinkle baking soda on at bedtime and vacuum it up in the morning. Get a steam cleaner and put a very small amount of bleach in it. I've done it. If it's just a couple table spoons to a gallon of water it won't ruin the carpet.

Well I run a daycare and have had boys do some pretty gross things. It's always disgusting to find out that they have splashed all over the wall and the toilet scrubber. Yuck... To start with I wipe down some part of the bathroom every time I go in. I keep peppermint oil in the house and I mix it with hot water and wipe down the walls. I keep the clorox drop ins inside the toilet at all times. I take the shower curtain down and wash them as often as possible. When things get really bad I I bring an air purifier in the bathroom and put the peppermint oil all over the filter. Don't forget to bleach the walls and floors a few times per week and include the cabinets.

Another thing that helps is to make a solution of water and baking soda and wipe everything down that you can.

I'd ditch the rug around the toilet. Also, my toilet seems to magically "grow" little pools of pee around the bolts/bolt covers--could there be pee under there that's being missed?
I only have two male pee-ers here but it seems like every day I (yes--the O. who does manage to get HER pee INTO the toilet!) seem to wipe the toilet seats/rim/base/front of bowl every day with Clorox wipes to keep it smelling good in our bathrooms. Sigh.

i had the same problem, it was driving me nuts. then one day i walked in on my 7 year old peeing in the tub, he thought it was cool. arg!!!! maybe do a little investigating :) either way, boys/men are gross. i would certainly ditch the carpet, i wipe down around my toilet a couple of times a day, dont forget the part under the rim on the outside, and where the base of the toilet meets the floor, in there.... it runs down there when they miss, which is always. ugh...

Simple test. Get a black light, turn off the lights, turn on the black light, if there is urine residue it will fluoresce. Show the boys. They will love to try it. Then they will blame each other for the mess and you still have to clean it, but at least you don't have to get your nose down there.

I know you already have a lot of suggestions but I wanted to add 2 more: put cheerios in the toilet for the kids to aim at. Cheap way to encourage good habits. Also, if you can SAFELY add a dehumidifier in the space, that will help with the water. You really don't want that moisture staying around as it will lead to mold and mildew where you can't see it and that is really bad for everyone's health. I call my stepson the "PeePee King" b/c he REFUSES to take aim. But he also ends up cleaning it as I refuse to and also refuse to make our housekeeper do it when she comes. I do, however, let him put on face masks to do it. Urine is ammonia which is bad to breath in (something for you to consider). I love my boys but they are stinky (husband too)! LOL Good luck!

Hi, it sounds like you are doing a great job cleaning. The only thing that I can think of is looking at the cleaners you use. Are you using a bleach-based cleaner on the toilet and around it, like Lysol? Have you tried Pinesol on the floors, or maybe bleach on the floors. there may be some urine in the calk around the floor too. Try Lysol spray in the air as well. Also cleaning twice per week (at least the toilet) helps. I have a son too!

Remember to make sure that you DO NOT use a bleach or bleach based cleaner at the same time you are using an ammonia cleaner. If the two combine it will create a toxic gas that can be deadly.

I only have girls and have not had this problem, but we did just move into a new house and the bathroom smelled like urine near the toilet. We cleaned everything, but it still smelled. I had some Nature's Miracle on hand and I used that in the bathroom-- it worked GREAT! I sprayed it all over the place... on the walls, baseboards, floor, and toilet. You can find it at the pet store in a red and white bottle. It's made to get rid of pet urine odor and stains. Good luck!

I had that problem too when I was potty training my son. I smelled everywhere to find out where it was and it was on my really nice, dry clean only, shower curtain. Just like you my toilet is right next to the shower. I took it to the cleaners and they couldn't get the smell out. Ditched the shower curtain, bought a new one, and everything smells great now.

All good answers. I imagine it's the carpet. Once it gets into the backing it just doesn't come out. One option might be to soak the carpet in your washing machine with warm water and oxyclean, overnight. Then wash it again. If it's too big to wash in the machine then you need several smaller, washable, ones. You just have to keep reminding them to be careful. Also I made my husband take turns with me cleaning the bathroom for a while. It's was amazing how well he did at convincing the boys to "be careful". I leave vinegar in several custard cups in rooms we are not in. Check weekly to see if it's still there.

I had that happen when my boys were little and I could not figure it out until one day I happened to view what was going on....they were peeing in the tub!! So use your imagination and scrub where you should not have to. Good luck.
