Help, My Daughter Is Only 7 And....

Help, I need some input on this.
My daughter turned 7 in January and she came home from school today stinking of BO. Isn't 7 kind young for that? I thought that would start around 9.
I will get deodorant for her, but I am just thinking that 7 is a little too young for her to actually need it.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone. I did get her an all natural deodorant so I hope it helps.
We do talk about changes in her body, correct terminology, etc.
It was just the age thing that caught me off guard.

Nope. It's NOT uncommon. My daughter (will be 30 in August) had BO at 8. She didn't start her period until 13 - but BO and hair started at 8.

She needs to learn about proper hygiene and diet. Diet plays a huge role in how her body grows and develops.

Get her deodorant.

Yep.
Kids stink.
Hormones kick in, they sweat more, bacteria grows and body odor happens.
It's common to start with arm pit smells about that age - and you can expect her period to start somewhere around 9 to 11 give or take a few years.
Besides deodorant, make sure she's washing daily and not just splashing water around in the bath or shower - lather, rinse (there's no need to repeat).
Time to get her a book about growing up - there are many.
"The Care and Keeping of You" is one.

It's not too young for her to have body odor. It's actually not that unusual for kids around her age to have it; ask your pediatrician if you're concerned, but you're likely to hear that many kids also are starting to sweat more and smell more in the early grades.

Get her a natural deodorant -- I would avoid anti-perspirant but would get a basic, natural deodorant. Tom's of Maine is what we use and have for years now (since my teen girl was about eight or nine!).

That's when my daughter started using it. She is 12 and recently switched to men's because even the clinical strength woman's wasn't working for her. She also had a prescription to help keep her dry.

My son is 11 and just started needing it this year (but he just turned 11 this month).

My other son is 9 and isn't in need of it yet.

Everyone is different.

Mine developed a different smell around that age - not sure it was BO but their hair etc. started to have a different odor.

If she's washing herself at this age, maybe just supervise to make sure she's getting it all done correctly.

Are her tops sweaty? If she was complaining of wetness then she'd want an antiperspirant but if it's just you noticing a little BO, deodorant is the way to go.

I've noticed my kids all hit puberty at different ages - even within same family. So there's no set age.

Every body is different. I had bo at that age-- I was extremely active. I would suggest avoiding anything with aluminum. Jury is out on long term effects. We just started using Tom's of Maine apricot scent and really like it-- I don't smell. Hubby works in a physically demanding job and it works wonders for him.

LOL. I distinctly remember that pungent malodorous scent filling my nose and making my eyes water like it was just yesterday. I could barely believe my 6 year old could smell that bad so young. I couldn't believe my nose but alas my baby and the world needed him to wear deodorant long before I was ready.
They grow up way too fast but deodorant is your friend. LOL

It is not too young but other things to consider as well. My daughter just turned 8. She is not the cleanest child. When dad gets her from school, he says she is one of the messiest. When she smells, it is usually because she did not wipe correctly and wash her hands. I have been trying get to her to have better bathroom hygiene. Seriously, the girl can STINK! For the past couple of months she has gotten better at taking showers every other day and a better job of washing her hair. She hates when I do it and it gets her to wash better. When she cleans properly, the smell goes away.

It is kind of early. I'm not saying to worry about it, but I would actually talk to the doctor about it. It's good for the ped to know what's going on, just in case there's something that he or she would like to check on...

It's not too young anymore. My daughter was 4 when she had to start wearing deodorant. Things seem to happen younger and younger. We tried deodorant but that didn't work. She has to us antiperspirant. Good luck!!

I started noticing it with my daughter at about that age. Curiously, it isn't a daily problem. I mostly notice it when she is sick or just before or after an illness. Never notice it after her 2 hour gymnastics class. Her feet on the other hand.....
