Hello ladies. I am hoping one of you can help me. My son has a black spot on the right side of his tongue. I can not wipe it off. He has also been making this really high pitched squeak, almost like he is having a hard time breathing. He doesn't act sick or anything, but I am really concerned. Any ideas? Should I take him to his pedi today? Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So I took him yesterday, and it was just a bruise from teething. Thanks for the advice!

Hi A., I would call your pediatrician right away, I looked up this on internet and there has been many people with a black spot on their tongue, for most of them it turned out to be nothing, it can be anything from nothing, to melanoma, to a contatious virus, and sinse I'mj sure he doesn't smoke I would guess a virus, or one lady said heres look like a black marker spot, so has your son got his hands on a black marker? Try not to worry most things with kids turn out to be nothing, let us moms know what you find out if you don't mind. J. L.

Seems like he is having a hard time breathing and a weird squeak noise?
Take him do the Doctor ASAP... or the ER.
The black spot can be anything...

I would 1st take your son A.S.A.P. to the ped. doc. any issues with difficulty breathing is abnormal. All the suddon out of nowhere his throat could close and he would stop breathing. Also after taking to the ped. doc. ask for a referral to E.N.T. doc. he should see a specialist. Maybe is an allergy but could also be worse. I dont want to scare you but breathing issues can take a sudden change for the worse and result in tragic outcome. I am a nurse and dont work with children (it just to heart renching)but I have seen adult breathing (squeeking) issues turn into the inability to breath over night and the out come was well you know...God bless

the spot could be a blood blister from biting his tongue. I would call the nurse practitioner/doctor about the breathing issues (check nostrils first to see if anything is stuck up ther).

The tongue is a very important diagnostic tool in Chinese medicine. Black usually indicates that there is something out of balance and can indicate either cold or heat in the body depending on the other symptoms he is showing. I would recommend taking him to an acupuncturist who specializes in children. If you're in LA check out BEE Well Kidz in Santa Monica or go to www.acufinder.com to find someone in your area.

Anytime there is difficulty breathing I would call the doctor ASAP! Things can change too quick.

YES! Or possibly even an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist.

It could be a reaction to a medication. Has he taken anything lately? Read the bottles. One time when I was in the Caribbean on a cruise I woke up with a black tongue. I flipped out - positive I had some weird tropical disease. Turns out that a side effect of Pepto Bismol - which I was taking for nausea - is a black tongue. LOL ;)

Hi, my son had a block spot on his tongue once and it was because of the iron in his multivitamin that I gave him.

I would take him to his pedi today as soon as you can. Just watch the spot to see if it grows. Most docs have a 24 hr answering service or someone on call, too, so you can, maybe, try calling first. They will most likely tell you to come in, though. Personally, with first babes, I prefer to err on the side of caution with something unusual (which could be nothing, but....). =0)You won't ever be sorry for doing so. Please let me know how he is and what the doc says.
Your babe is blessed, too. =0)

You don't mention how old your baby is? I wouldn't worry so much about the black spot but if he is wheezing I would get him to a doctor asap. It sounds like he may be having an asthma attack. Better to error on the side of caution. Also could he have gotten a hold of anything and swalled it? Take a good look around and see if anything looks like he could have gotten into it will help the Dr.'s figure out what is going on. Good luck.
