She's growing new hair.
All babies lose the hair they are born with and it falls out as new hair grows in.
It's nothing to worry about.
Please talk to your pediatrician about your concerns.
Many have help lines where you can call a nurse 24 hours a day because they know new parents have worries and need help.

3 months olds get bored and they will grab anything - ears, nose, hair, etc.
Try giving her something to hold onto - a binky, a teething ring, a rattle.
If she's scratching herself badly - wait till she's sleeping and make sure her nails are trimmed so she can't do that.
If worse comes to worse you can put mittens on her.

I trimmed my babies' nails so they couldn't scratch. I also didn't wash them with any soap/baby wash that was irritating. Nothing I used contained dyes or harsh irritants or was drying. Make sure you are rinsing well, and not over washing her.

You could put a little cap on her (those little cotton caps). I did in the winter with one of my babies just to keep his head warm.

Sounds like that first round of baby hair is falling out. Cut her nails short when she's asleep so she doesn't fight you on it. Consider those shirts/sleepers with little cuffs that fold over the fingers almost like mittens.

Your pediatrician has a call-in number (usually the regular number) that you can use for questions even if they aren't an emergency. There's a 24/7 line of course for serious emergencies, but you can call during regular business hours and at lease leave a message about your concerns so that someone (doctor or nurse) can call you back. There is no reason for a new parent to sit at home and be so worried all alone - pediatricians expect you to have concerns about feeding, skin issues, low-grade fevers and all kinds of things. This costs you nothing and you don't have to wait for an appointment. Please don't feel silly - use this line.

Also, ask your doctor or your librarian for good books on what to expect during the first 2 years - these can be helpful and reassuring.

sounds to me as if her baby fluff is falling out to make room for the real hair that's coming in.

if you keep her little nails trimmed the scratching shouldn't bother anything.

if she's getting fussy about it, maybe rub in just a touch of coconut oil.

Is her head dry and itchy? Are you getting all of the shampoo off of her head? Give her a nice bath and see what happens. My son didn't lose his hair but I thought it was normal for babies to lose it.

I agree with everyone else. One of mine was born with a head of jet-black hair. It all fell out and the new hair came in honey blonde. It was disconcerting, but it's common.

If you are really concerned, of course you should ask your pediatrician to have a look at her head.
