Hourly Pay for a "Mommy's Helper'

Hi Moms,

I was wondering how much should I pay a 12 year old girl (7th grader) to entertain my kids while I am in the house. She is my neighbor and she has stopped over to play with the kids in the past on her own time. She is a sweet, mature girl and I would like to schedule sometime where she comes over to play and gets paid for it. (Maybe once a week for two hours.)

I have 5 year old twins who usually get along with each other especially when an older person is playing with them. I would like her to play board games, read to them, and play sports with my kids while I am busy in the house. I called her yesterday and said, "Can you come over now and play with the kids?" I told her I would pay her. She was here for 3 hours and I asked her how much money was fair. She shrugged her shoulders, and said I don't know. So... I said how about 5 an hour? So I gave her 15 dollars.

Is that pay fair for a 12 year old mommy's helper? Thank you for your responses.
J.

Morning,

Seeing as though you have 2 children that the young lady would be caring for (even though you are home) I would think abit more per hour would be better. My duaghter would do this same thing for one child and she was paid $6.00 per hour. Have you talked about this to the mom of the young lady, Maybe she could have some input for you as well.

Just a thought.

That is really nice that you found someone you trust and who seems to enjoy spending time with the kids. I think the fact that she does such a nice job and seems enthusiastic, I would pay her a bit more.. I don't know what min wage is these days but the $6.00 amount sounds better to me. I agree, I would call her mom too just to check and make sure she is okay with her accepting this responsibility.
Have a nice weekend!

Since she is only 12, I think that 5.00 is appropriate, however I would ask the girl's mother if she thinks that is a fair rate. C.

I would say that $5/hr is very fair considering you are still there and she's also not old enough to really work at any place that has to pay minimum wage. It's about the same that I would pay a "mommy's helper." I would actually like one to help out with my kids on the weekends or evenings...but i just have to find a child in my neighborhood that is the right mature age and is into watching children. If you know of any in the glendale heights area please let me know. :)
