The State of Michigan (MSHDA) will send you a list of tax credit apartments in the area in which you are looking. The apartments are usually really nice apartments were 80% of the tenants are paying rents as high as $1000, but 20% are for low-income families with rents as low as $300.
Good Luck!
Here's a housing group in AnnArbor

Hi N.,
I know how hard afordable housing can be to find these days. There is a website that can help! Go to http://www.michiganhousinglocator.com
This is an amazing site. You can search by cost, # of bedrooms, ammenities, etc.
Most Section 8's have waiting lists that can be up to a year of a wait, or longer... and they are concentrating on homeless clients right now... I DO highly recommend that you apply for Section 8, but in the meantime, you'll still need a place to stay, and shelters are no fun, especially with a family.
You could also look into Transitional Housing. I know we have a couple of great homes here in Macomb County, and I'm sure Wayne has a bunch themselves.
You can look into Transitional Housing in Macomb County at:
www.macombhomeless.com, just check the resources page.
Good Luck in your search!
N.,
check with your local Department of Human Services (DHS). You'll definitely want to apply for Section 8 Housing, if you can. Heads up, there might not be an "open" application list at the current moment, but it's at least worth asking about.
There is a housing agency in Oakland County (Troy) called Community Housing Network.
Here's their website:
http://www.communityhousingnetwork.org/
Not sure of how their services are offered if you're currently living in Detroit (they might require you to live in Oakland County prior to providing assistance to you, but not positive), but maybe they can link you to services in Wayne County, closer to your area?
Also, you could check with local churches, Salvation Army, and/or homeless shelters, again - to be linked to needed services.
I'm praying for you and your family!
Blessings,
B.

Section 8 housing can be very cheap, and you'd qualify. Ask at the local FIA office for a list. The biggest problem is that they often have a waiting list. Years ago I was in one in Brownstown/Woodhaven and my rent went as low as $14/month.
good luck!
