How Can I Make My Sleeper Sofa More Comfortable?

Last year, we purchased an expensive La-Z-Boy sleeper sofa. We thought that by spending the extra money on a good brand, we would have a comfortable bed for our guests. Wrong! We have been contiually embarrassed by how uncomfortable our guest have been time and time again. As a couch it has become quite uncomfortable as well. I have a good friend coming to stay with us this Friday for a week and so I am trying to finally find a solution. Should I buy a foam topper to put on the existing sofabed mattress? Im sure that would make it a bit more comfy, but I'm concered you could still feel the bars in your back. And having to take it off and store it somewhere is not ideal. I saw a thick foam topper that is actually meant to replace the existing sofabed mattress- which would be nice because it folds into the sofa. But it is expensive and I'm still not sure about the metal-bar problem being solved with it. Another option would be to buy an air mattress to blow up and put on the bed when in use. Storage would be a little simpler with that. A final option would be to place some sort of board on top of the springs, which would take care of the metal bar problem....but storage would be a hassle with that too. As you can see, I have alot of ideas and I'm not sure which one to try! I would love feedback about things that have worked/not worked for anyone in a similar situation. Thank you in advance for all replies!

Personally, I would try the foam (egg crate type) topper. at least you could roll it up and store it in the corner of a closet. I hate air beds!
I don't think sofa beds or the sofas that have beds in them are ever very comfortable. Good luck!

Our sofa sleeper , although gorgeous, is treacherous too. When we use it, we open the bed frame, take off the mattress it came with, and use an inflatable mattress instead. There are no sharp points in the bedframe, and the inflatable is SOOOOO comfy!

:)

(tehehe, the kids use the ridiculous little mattress it came with to slide down the stairs!)

Perhaps a roll out tempurpedic bed topper? ...you can store it under the couch or under your actual bed.

At my parents house, we just yank the mattress off the bed and sleep on the floor. Then we put it back on the couch in the morning. The foam mattress my mom bought didn't help.

I know this may possibly sound mean to some, but could you let adult guests sleep on the children's bed(s) and let the children sleep on the sofa bed? I do not think there's much that can be done to add comfort (easily) to a sofa bed for an adult because the weight of an adult is going to hit that evil bar. But growing up, my cousin and I would sleep together in the sleeper sofa and didn't have a problem (70lbs vs 160lbs for an adult is a big difference). My aunt/uncle would sleep in my bed and I'd "camp" on the sofa and was perfectly happy with it. Even for kids, I'd throw on an egg crate foam thing, but I think it'd be better. OR, remove the mattress from the sofa and let the kids sleep on the mattress, on the floor? Try to make it "camp-ish" for them? I don't know how old your children are or if they'd go for it, but that's my suggestion...
We certainly didn't mind giving up beds for temporary guests when we were kids. I also remember my brother giving up his bed for my grandparents, me giving up my bed for my aunt/uncle, and the 2 of us going upstairs to sleep on bunk beds. We liked it....we didn't really go upstairs too often so it was different to have a floor just to ourselves when the house was overrun with adults.

I would find a good topper. Then roll it up and place it in a space saver bag and suck the air out of it. This will make it easier to store. .

Gee I am sorry it is not comfortable. We had a Bassette sleeper sofa that was so comfortable, people were amazed.

Hi. I would buy a foam topper. Can that person sleep sideways on it? Or if not, I'd just slide the mattress on to the floor. Don't buy the thicker one to replace the mattress, though. They are usually softer, so you tend to sink into it more, which means you'd feel the bar even more. Good luck!

When I stayed at my folks, we used a big piece of plywood under the mattress. It worked well, but I'm sure storage would be an issue (they had it around from when my sister and I were in dance and would practice our tap and pointe on it - the bed was in the basement and they just kept it against the wall in the unfinished part).
