Ok So i bought my daughter a bed well sorta. I bought her a twin mattress which i had to order so its on its way. then i went today and bout her a platform bed that is supposed to be made for a twin. her twin mattress measures 6 inch thick x 38 wide by 75 long. well after getting the platform bed i was feeling uneasy bc it looked small. so i measured it. its 75 inch long but only 30 inch wide WHAT!!! how is this suppose to work? have 4 inch overlap on both sides? Is there any way this will work? BTW the frame is not returnable! please any advice would be great.

What can I do next?

Oh.

Those are military or camping cot frames. Cots/racks are MUCH smaller (as you've noticed) than twins.

Time to stick it in the garage for camping, or to relist it on craigslist

Without knowing what the platform looks like could you attach a board to the top of it to support the extra width? As long as it is screwed on it should not shift and put her in danger of falling off.

Looking at the picture you should be able to attach a board to the top. If you were planning on putting the bed against a wall I would put six inches of overhang on the side against the wall and two on the other. The wall will stabilize the bigger side. :)

I would get a board cut at Lowe's or Home Depot, they cut it free and get a twin bed frame and just put the mattress you bought on it until you decide what to do with the platform. Either that or have a foam piece cut somewhere to fit the platform.

I would check the thrift stores....they always have tons of bed rails just standing in the corner!

I looked online and this is what I found.

Crib Mattress Size: 28" x 52"
Twin Mattress Size (Single): 39" x 75"
Full Mattress Size (Double): 54" x 75"

I did find a link that sells 30" wide matrresses meant for cots and rollaways
http://www.sleepys.com/en/info/MattressSizes/

But I think your girl will grow out of a 30in wide bed fast and there wouldn't be any room for you to lay with her.

Bummer - they sold you a cot, not a twin size platform. I would call and scream and yell about it and make them take it back. Or have your husband or another guy make the phone call for you - sometimes men are taken more seriously than women.

Barring that, get a board cut to the size of the mattress and use that to stabilize the mattress. That said...this isn't going to last you long. The "platform" is a fold up cot designed to be stashed in a closet and pulled for occasional use. They're horrifically uncomfortable not not worthy any money you paid. That bar in the middle is awful on the back. You can get a real metal bed frame for about $25 and if you don't want to purchase a box spring right now, can fit it with a board and lay the twin mattress right on top and then when she's a little older and heavier, you can add a box spring for additional comfort and support.

Yes, those are camping beds or hide a ways. They are not full size beds. I would go to the local furniture store and find a cheap box springs and Hollywood frame or just buy a different platform frame.

They should have listed the sizes on the add for sure but probably had no idea it was not a regular twin size bed size.

She can sleep on the mattress on the floor too if all else fails. I have found a couple of bed frames over at 44th and South May at the thrift store on the SE corner, in the corner of the shopping center. The store on 74th and Penn, on the West end of the strip mall, I think it is Uptown or something close like that, they used to have some furniture in there but I am not sure if they still carry it. I actually bought our toddler bed from the one on about 42nd and south Penn too.

On the North side I also find bed frames and mattresses over at the Unique Thrift store on N. Meridian and 16th, also check with the one on MacArthur and 23rd, and 16th and Meridian, just west on 16th.

If you really want to buy new then you might check with some of the stores on SW 29th between May/Agnew all the way up towards the old Capitol Hill area. I think Jude and Jody plus several other stores that are discount furniture are on there.

Good luck, I think I would stick with the platform idea if you don't want to just buy a box spring and frame. Our frame only cost about $25. The box springs was about $100.

Take the frame back and pitch a loud obknoxious fit. I bet you they will take it back. Be so loud that every potential customer from miles around can hear you or it the company you purchased the frame from has a facebook page complain there or try the manufacturer of the platform.

You could always try selling the platform and going out and buying a simple frame instead until you can save up the money for a new platform that will fit.

There have been times when I have had to return an item that was "non-returnable". See if you can get a male friend to come with you. If the sales people are men, men deal with men differently.
