How Do I Remove Mold from Fabric?

Someone at our church donated a much need jumperoo. It is in excellent condition except for the seat. The fabric has all these black dots on it. I am assuming it is mold. It is not fuzzy or have any texture at all. It is as if it is part of the fabric. I have tried bleach, white vinagear, spot cleaner, and nothing has even made a difference. I am hoping one of you has had to deal with something similar and can offer me some advice on how to get rid of it. Thanks for all you help.

hey S.,
hopefully, you haven't thrown it away yet! sorry this response is late, however here's your remedy. soda (coke)! i know it sounds crazy, but you put the item in the washing machine with a can of soda and the lowest water setting and let the soda work. then you wash it like regular with your normal detergent. my husband and i have a tub of all our winter clothes (ski pants, etc.) and water somehow made it's way in the tub and when we unpacked it this year, everything was covered in mold! the mold had actually eaten away at some pants and jackets! anyway, we were able to salvage some of the clothing by washing it with soda. i hope this works for you!

I've experienced this before, tons of times - usually when I accidentally leave a bag of wet cloth wipes for too long - Yes, those black spots are mold spots but NO they are not active mold. You've already killed the mold with all those things you've used. There is no risk that the spots will do anything now; they are just unsightly. And they cannot be removed now because they have basically been "cooked into" the fabric. Unless you sew a patch over the spots to cover them up, or try to find a replacement cloth cover, you're stuck with it as is. But don't throw it out! It's harmless now!!

Sounds like mildew to me, and you probably aren't going to be able to get it out. If it doesn't bother you and the fabric isn't weakend by it, I would just use it that way, if you are just using it at home, no big deal. Just make sure that it and all the harsh cleaning products haven't weakend the fabric where it may rip, wouldn't want that little one falling out of the bottom of it.

As you have found, it's virtually impossible to get rid of. Unfortunately, you really just need to trash the item. Even if you think you've gotten out, it sometimes comes back and honestly, mold isn't healthy for kids in any form.

If bleach didn't affect it and it doesn't smell, is there a possibility it's an ink pen? I'm from a very humid climate originally - I used to boil water on the stove and "cook" mildewed items for 30 minutes or so before adding bleach.. there was nothing that didn't come out.

Good luck.

Here are some ways you can try. If it is the rainforest jumperoo the seat comes out.

1. Lemon juice and salt. Moisten stain with lemon juice, spread on salt and place in the sun to dry. Rinse thoroughly. Use with care on colored fabrics.

2. Perborate bleach. Mix one tablespoon sodium perborate bleach and one pint of water. Use hot water if it won't damage the fabric, otherwise use lukewarm water. Sponge or soak the stained area. Allow to remain one-half hour, then rinse. Test on colored garments first.

3. Chlorine bleach. Mix two tablespoons of liquid chlorine bleach with one quart of warm water. Sponge the stain or soak the stained area in the solution. Allow the bleach to remain on the fabric from five to 15 minutes, then rinse.

An additional soaking in weak vinegar (two tablespoons to a cup of water) will stop further bleach action.

Good Luck.

I would agree that you are going to have to throw away the fabric...you might contact the manufacturer though...by the time I got to use my Jumperoo with my 2nd child, the toy had stopped lighting up even with new batteries...I emailed the manufacturer with the SN and production date of my Jumperoo, told them my problem, and they actually sent me a whole new toy unit free of charge. Couldn't hurt to try...

Alternatively, is there someone who can sew and replicate the fabric on the seat?
