When taking the kids out to play in the snow, do you layer them up? My husband and I disagree if you should or not. We do not have snow suits for them, so they just have their winter coats, tops, and jeans.
If we are spending time outside (which we do a lot!) the kids wear fleece pants (never jeans), a shirt, fleece top, smartwool socks (not cotton), snowpants, winter coat, fleece hat, waterproof mittens or gloves and snowboots. The baby has a snowsuit instead of the coat and snowpants.
yes, layers are good. Don't over do it though! Wear what you would wear if you were playing in the snow!
If they are playing in the snow and don't have snow pants - then of course you have to layer! I buy snow pants used or at a local Walmart type store for less than $15- so worth it! I always just buy the blacks ones, that way my daughter can wear them handed down from my son.
I think the layer next to the skin (including feet) is supposed to NOT be cotton...which traps moisture next to the skin.
To play in the snow... thermal shirt, pants, jeans, sweater, ski bibs, heavy coat, gloves (with mittens if needed), and hat that covers the ears.
We go snow skiing as a family every year, so we have the extra gear :) Otherwise, instead of thermals they could wear tights under the jeans & a t-shirt under the sweater, maybe even windbreaker type pants over the jeans instead of the bibs.
I thinik it depends on the age of the kids. If they are young, say under 10, I would. BUT older than that they are old enough to tell if they are cold enough to need more clothes. I'm from Idaho, where there is typically snow on the ground for 7-9 months out of the year. We would wear our regular jean pants, a coat, snowboots, and gloves to play in the snow for hours. (Definitely put on an extra pair of socks though!) You don't want to over dress them though, because that will cause them to sweat, and then the sweat freezes and they are worse off than having been under-dressed.
Winter coat, hat, gloves and warm under clothes with their snowboots. They have snowpants and it depends on the snow and how long we plan to be out if I make them wear them or not. Sometimes its pretty cold here so the snow is light and does not stick, other times it is wet and that's when they definitely wear snowpants.
you could ask around, we have borrowed them from friends. We once went to the snow and put stretchy pants under cargo-type pants (our daughter was 3 at the time) and she did fine. She is naturally warm though, so probably depends on the kid. I know growing up we went out in the snow all the time with long johns, pants, and sweaters...
Absolutely layer! The layers trap heat between them so make the kids much warmer than just one "heavy" warm layer. My son wears thermal top and bottom (they're actually a pair of pajamas), a long-sleeved shirt and/or sweatshirt, sweatpants or lined athletic pants, 2 pairs of socks, and of course winter coat, hat, and snow mittens. I have a similar number of layers on, as I am intolerant of cold! :)
snowsuits ARE helpful... I never bought any, But their Grandmother has, and they are very helpful! maybe you can buy some sale ones this early spring to use for next year if you wish.
Before my kids got snowsuits i had them in leggings or long johns with jeans over them or some other thick-material pants... and had them wear two pairs of socks and a t-shirt, sweater/sweatshirt and overcoat. gloves, hat and scarf and rain boots (i like rain boots cause you can use them any season!). Basically when it gets too long or they start looking too wet or complain about the cold, they come inside. That's the way it was when i was little, too!
For a snow play outside during let's say 20F I put thermals (top and bottom), then ski socks, then snow boots (waterproof), then fleece pants, snow bibs (waterproof), then turtleneck and fleece sweater then ski (snow) jacket, then hat (covers ears), scarf and waterproof gloves (mittens).
My husband and I disagree but my kids are never wet nor cold. We go back inside when their fingers get cold, usually after 1-2 hours of playing outside.
If she's going to play in the snow, she gets her snowpants, jacket, hat, and mittens.
If she's going to play at the park, but it's cold, heavy pants, mittens, hat and jacket.
I like layers because you can shed them if they get hot. Her coat has a thick insert and the lighter shell.
I've also put on tights (the woolly ones, not the thin ones) instead of socks.
I'm in Texas so we dont get snow much but we did a few weekend ago. We put short sleeve undershirts, then long sleeve thermals, then a hoodie, then a winter coat, hat, hood, and gloves. We use jeans or fleece pants with a pair or two of socks and rain boots.
Go outside in just your coat and then later in layers and you'll definitely see layers are so much warmer. They insulate. Snow suits were great and even then I layered under the snow suit. Two pairs of jeans and even more under that is good and undershirts, shirts sweat shirts, etc. layered is great for warmth. Feet should be warm too or that makes you cold all over. If no boots be sure to layer socks and even sometimes you can put plastic bags over the shoes and tie them or secure them on the foot and that keeps shoes dry and easy to take off when they come in. Can be slippery if the right situation though.
When we first moved to MO from LA we didn't have snow suits or boots. We put our girls in tights, one or two pair, jeans or sweats, two to three shirts, bottom one was long sleeved. For their feet we were definately improvising...we put a pair of socks and then small garbage bags or grocery bags, then another sock and old tennis shoes. We double gloved them for their hands. It was a process, but they were comfy. Not too cold, but not super hot either. Now is the time to go to the thrift stores and get snow suits. Get several for the next few years. We did that years ago and now need to get new ones since our girls are much older now. Do layer though or you'll end up with sick kids. Better to be safe than sorry. Good luck and God Bless.
i agree with amanda - and if you start looking at walmart now, you may soon find them on clearance for like $8. i got my son's off season, but it was still wintertime. i also got a size big and he has worn them for two seasons. they are kind of short in the leg now but the straps adjust and his boots make up the pant leg difference...
if not, then YES layer. as many as you can get on them. i am always shocked how wet and cold my son gets and he never seems to notice. i usually have him take a warm bath or have something warm to eat/drink afterwards. he doesn't seem to care but it makes me feel better :)

All 3 kids will wear an under shirt, long sleeved sweat shirt,girls leggings then jeans,boy jeans then sweat pants,stocking hat,water proof gloves/mittens,snow pants,long socks,snow boots,winter coat zipped with hood on...
So no they don't just go out in winter coat tops & jeans
