In a drawer in the kitchen. Never noticed them not lasting.
Put them in an annoying toy that the kids play with everyday. The batteries will last and last. . .
seems like they don't last long if they are in a drawer in their container, open view.

we have a wall-mounted unit that separates them from A, AA, AAA, 9V, C and D with a small device at the top that we can insert the battery in and see if it's charged or dead - we keep them in a cool, dry place (our storage room)
The freezer cuz it freezes it. lol but really
I keep mine either in the fridge or freezer. I heard they last a lot longer kept cold.
In the fridge! I don't know if that helps with their longevity, but I always know where they are.
I have one of those battery storage units from Improvements Catalog. It's hanging on the wall in our toy room closet. I haven't noticed any problem with their longevity. I usually buy Rayovac or Energizer.

I had heard that it is better to store them in the fridge.
