last month I was diagnosed with Strep-B virus...didn't even have this when I was pregnant! I've been thinking - how the heck did I get that?!

My husband is monogamous as am I....I've done research on Strep-B and I know it's not sexually transmitted - but they don't say HOW one gets it...they quote the risks to pregnant women, etc...but not HOW one gets it!!

Thank you!!!

What can I do next?

You're just a carrier. That's all. :)

"The bacteria that causes group B strep normally lives in the intestine, vagina, or rectal areas. Group B strep colonization is not a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Approximately 25% of all healthy women carry group B strep bacteria. For most women there are no symptoms of carrying the GBS bacteria."

I had it with my second baby but not my first or third. Been wondering how it happens too since tomorrow I get the fun little stick for my #4 preg. We'll see.

Yes, strep B lives on/in us - usually w/no problems! It generally takes something else happening to set it off to do anything - like hte body gets really run down w/a virus or other infection.

(believe me, I know it can end up killing as well - my best friend's son died of complications of this after being sick and getting sick again quickly - it attacked his lung tissue -- I was there the day he passed...)

It is bacterial- not viral-- it is naturally existing bacteria in the vagina of some people... A pretty big percentage actually. It can flare up...and the level can also go down. If the bacteria count goes up...it is considered an infection. It can also be in the urinary tract. I never had it with my first two pregnancies but did with my third. They only test pregnant women usually because strep b is SUPER dangerous if undiagbosed at birth.

garlic garlic garlic. When I work with women in pregnancy, I suggest garlic cloves into the vagina to eradicate the bacteria. You can also take garlic capsules.

I believe its a natural bacteria that lives in the body and its kind of like a yeast infection, there is always yeast in your system but sometimes things get off kilter and it becomes a yeast infection. This is just a strep b bacteria on a rampage. its not something you contract its just something you have and if you are pregnant and you're having a flareup then they treat it. Which is why all women get tested when they are preggo because it is in our bodies, not something that a certain group of people are at high risk for.

It's a totally naturally occuring bacteria that only women get. Some are more prone than others (they say there's no genetic link, but if your mom or sisters have a history of it, then you're more than likely to have it as well). Take your meds and don't worry about it ;) I only had it when I was preggers with #3, but as you now know, you don't have to be pregnant for it to manifest. Now, if you're looking for an excuse to get out of housework and your husband doesn't know what it is exactly, you can tell him 'I can't clean the basement, my vagina's sick', LOL!!

I had it with both pregnancies.... it is no big deal and just something that is living on our bodies. Doens't hurt us in anyway. But it isn't great for baby as they come out, so they will just give you antibiotics in the hospital and all will be fine.
You didn't catch anything... just one of the lucky ladies (like so many) that happen to have it down below :)

What Suruchi K. said. It flared up for me at the end of my pregnancy, I was on ABs during delivery, and DD is fine.

You get it the same way you get regular strep. I've had Strep B so many times I can't even count, mostly in college and it had NOTHING to do with sex then, that's for sure.I had it in my throat and had all the symptoms of regular strep.

I'm not sure how you get it but I can tell you that with my first child I tested negative for it and for my second I tested positive. My Dr. said that I probably always had it but it was dormant or not found the first pregnanct/test!
