I think if you keep them cool and out of direct sunlight, they'll be fine. Especially if you cover the cut flesh with a thin layer of Vaseline. That really helps them last!
Hi, Moms! We usually get together with friends to carve our pumpkin on the weekend before Halloween. But, with Halloween on a Wednesday - if we carve our pumpkin on Sunday, is it going to be wilted/rotten by Wednesday? Does anyone know? Thanks!!

Depends on the weather mostly. I won't be carving mine until Sunday either. They might not be pristine by Halloween but it will be dark and they will be fine. I don't think they will get too hairy moldy in 3 days.
We live in Florida. Carved it last Wed. Now is looks like pumpkin goo with black hair. Ick. Tossed it. Going to try again on Sunday. Fingers crossed it will last till Halloween...or that Hurricane Sandy doesn't blow it away.
The colder it is the longer they will last. If you put it in the frige, it will last till halloween easily.
Hope you hand your kids have a good time.
Yes, rotten by Wednesday. It's a bummer. Takes alot of work, wish we could enjoy them longer.
Rub Vasaleen (sp) on the areas of the pumpkin that has been carved. That will help seal in the moisture and keep it from rotting/shriveling...
depends on temperatures . in so call three days because Oct. is a warm month for us.
I just had some tenants that carved theirs this last wknd get pissed off when I told them they needed to throw them in the trash. They were all rotten on the bottom and oozing pumpkin bodily fluids...
They only last a day or two in nice cold, crisp weather. Otherwise they become rodent and insect fodder, and implode.
Keep it as cool as you can - in the shade, not in the hot sun. Put it in the basement or the refrigerator if the temps are warm. Or just let it get a little soft - that's part of the tradition!
And carving it is too much fun to miss out on because you're worried about Wednesday! On Wednesday, everyone will be focused on other things anyway!
Depends a lot on the weather, too.
We live on the southern coast, where it is high humidity all the time. They don't last but a couple of days before they are starting to mold here. If it is unusually dry and cool, they might last a little longer (an extra day or 2?). Today it was around 86 degrees....
The past year or two, we haven't even carved one. I just drew on them with paint/markers, or used those stick things to stick into them to make them stuff, you know, like the cat ears and stuff?
I read on Pintrest that if you open and sprinkle those little packets of silica (you know the ones in the bottom of a new purse) inside the pumpkin it helps absorb the moisture and reduces the time it takes to rott. I haven't tried it but its totally worth buying a new purse to try it out! ;)
We are probably going to carve ours on Sunday, but up here in MI they are expecting high temps to be in the 40s from Sunday until past Wednesday, and lows in the 30s, so I am not worried about it. Sucks for trick-or-treating, but the pumpkins should last. Just depends how warm or not warm it's going to be.
i'm hoping for a week. but it's a bit colder here.
