we just got our pellet stove and 3 tons of pellets today and I was wondering how many tons you usually use in a winter? Our home is about 1600 sq feet and pretty well insulated

Thank You everyone :) My FIL has a pellet stove in their basement and their house is about twice the size of ours maybe a little bigger and he was trying to tell us we needed to order more bags because we would probably go through 2 a day I'm sure on the cold January days we might but he told us we should order about 4 more tons before winter gets here because come march they are hard to find. It just seemed like a lot to me. We have our oil in our tank just in case we need but hope not to need to use the oil too often.
We go through about 1 ton each winter. We have gas heat in the house, so we don't leave the pellet stove on all the time (like when we're not home), but it definitely warms the entire house!
Don't know if it helps, but we have a wood stove and burn about 5 to 6 cords a year. Our home is 2600 sq feet and on the super cold days we do have to turn on the gas heat because the house is so big.
LOVE heating with wood! you are going to love it! Make sure you get a kidco gate if you have kids or pets :)
Besides the size of your house, your climate and your comfort zone will have a big impact on how much fuel you go through. If you have very cold, long winters, or if you like your home heated to 72 degrees (rather than 68 or 65) then you will go through more pellets.
For those who don't know what a pellet stove is: A pellet stove is a stove that burns compressed wood or biomass pellets to create a source of heat for residential and sometimes industrial spaces. By slowly feeding fuel from a storage container (hopper) into a burn-pot area, they create a constant flame that requires little to no physical adjustments.

I run my stove 24/7 all winter and I go through roughly 3 1/2 tons. I usually buy 3 tons and then have to run out in March or so for another half ton. My house is about the same size as yours. It is a split-level and the stove is in the basement. It really does heat my entire house. I keep the thermostat set around 65 and it will kick on on some of those really cold nights. It's great though, I love it. Good luck!
3 tons should be fine. My house is a little bigger and we keep it at 70 using 1 - 1 1/2 bags per day. You can always pick up a few extra bags if you need them. I love my pellet stove - it's one of the best things we ever bought. You will see your heating cost cut in 1/2 easy.
We have the same size house and well insulated. In southern vermont we use about 3 tons a year, and maybe 75 gallons of oil back up heat. But we turn it all off during the day.
We use ours pretty much exclusively in the winter, with a little wood in the wood stove once in a while. We live in northern Vermont, and just barely had enough last winter with 5 tons, but temps for us in the winter are regularly below freezing. You're a little further south, so I'm assuming your winters are a little milder. In Jan and Feb, we put a bag in in the morning before we leave for work and another in the evening to last through the night. Before Jan and after Feb we can usually get by on a bag and a half. We just love our stove. It cut our bill in half and has already paid for itself in just a few years. Ours is in the basement and heats the whole house and is so much cleaner and easier to use than wood stoves!
What is a pellet stove? Don't assume we all know about these...
