How Much to Pay Housesitter.

Hi- I am going on vacation for a week. I don't really need anyone to take care of my house by I wanted to give my friends 12 year old daughter the chance to make some money. She will be scooping the litter box every few days, getting my mail, and basicly visiting my cats. She would have not to feed them because they have self feeding bowls that last about two weeks. So my question is how much should I pay her? I was thinking $20 plus a thank you gift from Disney World. Is this enough? I would love opinions. Thanks.

What can I do next?

I think that sounds very reasonable. My kids did similar stuff for a neighbor. But they had to water outside plants, get the mail, feed fish, feed cats, and feed snakes/lizards with crickets!! eww! (well.. I had to go with them for that.. I had girls) They got $20 for the week.

My daughter watched our neighbors pets for a week, and they paid her $10 a day, but it was 2 dogs, i can and grab the mail. She also walked the dogs when she got home from school. My neighbor called a Kennel to see how much they charged to watch the animals, to get an idea how much she was going to save by having my daughter take care of them instead. I think 20 bucks is a little cheap if you want her to spend time with the cats. I would go at least $35. I know she's young, but it's still her time. Divide the hours she would probably spend with the animals into and hourly wage, make it reasonable.

Professional pet sitters charge about 10 dollars per day for the first pet and add another 5 bucks or so per animal or service they have to do. I know when I've checked into it, they easily quoted 40 bucks or more per day for my brood of animals. I believe on care.com, 5-10 dollars per hour is considered appropriate.

How close does she live to your house??? Is she going to be able to just walk over there and take care of the cat?? I think I would offer her $5 a day...ask her to come and entertain the cat everyday...then a nice little memento from your trip would be a good added extra.
Enjoy your vacation!!

Good Morning D., I think 20.00 and the gift from Disney World would certainly be a wonderful payment. If you consider $5.00 a day would be good since she is getting mail daily, and playing with your pets most days.

Have a great vacation, we all need one sometime.

God Bless

As the mom of 12 year olds, I know that $20 and a gift would be wonderful. Find out what characters she likes and you can get her a shirt or hat or something with that character. Wonderful that you are doing that. Have fun at Disney. Good luck and God Bless.

I think $20 and a small gift is plenty. I think kids now a day expect way too much for everything they do. 30 years ago we were lucky to get 50 cents and hour to babysit and now I hear they get $5-$10 an hour and a hard working 25 year old only get $7 an hour. Don't spoil todays kids. Let them learn the value of hard work.
