How to Clean Old Pewter Jewelry

Hi Moms!

My mother gave me several pieces of pewter jewelry that belonged to my great grandmother, but they are terribly tarnished. I picked up some Tarnx, but the bottle states NOT to use it on pewter. Does anybody have any suggestions? These pieces are over 100 years old, and I really don't want to ruin them. Thanks for any help!

What can I do next?

My husband is a jeweler and I asked him about your question and this is what he said.

Toothpaste is very very very bad for it!! Don't use it!

Pewter jewelry is usually very delicate. If anything find a silver polishing cloth and rub it very gently. This should help remove the tarnish.

Good luck with it, I hope it all turns out well for you!

We use the polishing clothes on all our jewelry and it is amazing the difference. You can get the clothes at just about any jewelry store and I think that even Walmart carries them. You might have to use a little elbow grease if it is really bad but you will see the stuff coming off onto the clothe.

You might try toothpaste. I'd use plain old white toothpaste. I've heard it's good for cleaning jewelry and I may have used it on pewter but I don't remember.

I don't know if this will help, but it does with chains on necklacxes, put it in some cornstarch and rub, my grandmother told me about this cheap fix.
Lots of luck
