How to Keep Apple Slices from Going Brown

What can I do to prepare peeled apple slices without turning brown so I can give them to my 2 year old son with his meals. I love the ones you can get with Happy Meals and WaWa also has bagged apple slices too. I would like to do the same. Would be especially helpful when we go out somewhere and I want to take a healthy snack.

What can I do next?

Spray some lemon or lime juice on the apple slices. Not too much and they will not go brown. Good luck.

You can purchase those green plastic fruit bags in the produce section.. The other thing is that pineapple juice will stop cut up fruit from turning , even banana slices for a few hours. .

you need an acid. Anything that turns color from the air needs an acid to stop it. Avocado, apple, stuff like that. A little lemon juice or lime juice, fresh or from the bottle will work just fine. You dont need alot. My oldest daughter takes apples for snack all the time, I cut em up, put them in a ziploc bag with a squirt of lemon juice, seal it and shake it up!

Orange juice also works and adds just a tiny bit of a flavorful tang.

We buy Empire apples which do not brown as quickly as other apples. I wouldn't cut them up too far in advance but I do pack them in my dauther's lunch and they do not turn brown.

You could also buy Fruit Fresh and follow the instructions. I've seen it either by the canning supplies or Walmart sells it year round near the boxes of Jello mixes.

Lemon juice (at least one tablespoon per six apples-adjust accordingly) or my fave- 7 UP.

Put them in a container with lemon lime soda (7Up, Sprite, Sierra Mist etc). You don't need alot. Just enough to cover them. It is a nice bubbly taste rather than sour lemon juice.

If you want to use what the prepackaged stuff is using, you need to get some ascorbic acid. It can be found in natural food stores, brew shops and often with canning supplies in a regular grocery store. You mix it with water and dip the apples in there. (It's basically 1/2 tsp. per 2 1/2 cups of water or its crushed equivalent in tablets.).

I use pineapple juice to keep them from browning...I don't like the taste of the lemon juice and I don't like the idea of the added sugar from the soda.
