I have seasoned a lot of cast iron - and found the best product is a cast iron conditioner (sold at ACE hardware, probably at other stores to). It may just be a kind of lard - do not use vegetable oil as it just gets sticky and gross. The conditioner seasons to a pretty black that is easy to clean.

Another tip - when you put the press in the oven to heat it, it can smoke a lot. I seasoned all of our cast iron in a propane grill outside. Keeps the nasty smoke outdoors. :) I used a medium flame for about an hour.

Hope this helps!

Do not use vegetable oil. Heat it up and coat with lard. You must use a saturated fat that won't break down and go rancid.

You can just season them the same way you would a cast iron skillet. Rub shortening (or lard) on them and bake at 250 for 4 hours. Make sure you put a baking sheet to catch any drips on the rack below the rack your using.

What I have found says NOT to use veg. oil. You can use crisco and like your other responses, bake at 250-350 for several hours. However, I did this with a dutch oven, and it makes the house smell terrible. I highly recommend doing it on a grill outside.

Rub Vegetable oil on the press and put it in the oven on a piece of foil and heat it on low like 200.o for like 30 .
