My 8 year old is a nail bitter. A friend noticed how her nail bed had dark streaks. She told me that represents a deficiency. Has any other mothers heard of such and if so do you know which deficiency it could be? I did make her a Doctor Appt. to find out more.

What can I do next?

Summary

Some parent thinks dark fingernails is a sign of a protein or iron deficiency, while some moms think they're grow out of it. The safest way is to check with a doctor, it could be something as simple as a deficiency, or as serious as an adrenal gland problem.

I've heard that biting nails is a sign of a protein or iron deficiency. I've always bit my nails, I actually bit them until I found out I was pregnant. And I've always had to have a lot of protein in my diet. But I'm not a doctor, so I could be completely wrong.

Definitely keep the drs. appt. and have her a physical check-up at that time. Your nails are indicators of health. I was in the hospital recently and I can not tell you how many drs./nurses would pick up my hands and look at the nails. Sometimes pressing on them gently and watching for a normal color change.

As in dark white streaks? I have always heard it was a zinc deficiency. I have been hearing that since I was a little kid though. I have had those same streaks in my nail beds too and have had no problems. I really don't think it is a big deal. That being said, if it would make you feel better, I would schedule a dr's appointment.

Hi, Dark fingernails could be a sign of anything these days, diabetes being one of them and there is a junior diabetes. I pray that's not her problem, but it's just the first thing I thought of when reading the message. I think taking her to the doctor is the best thing you can do at this time. I'll keep you in my prayers.

I would take her to the pediatrician to be examined. It could be a sign of many different health problems. Something as simple as a deficiency, or as serious as an adrenal gland problem or even skin cancer could be the cause.

Don't worry, it is probably one of the simpler causes, perhaps even caused from the nail biting itself, but more likely a deficiency. Still, it is certainly worth having it checked out, for your own peace of mind as well as to catch anything in it's earliest stages.

I've never heard of such. I think that she would eventually grow out it. When I was younger I did the same thing and my nails had dark streak too. I am now 27 I don't bit my nails anymore. I still have a light streak going down the center of one of my nails but it not that dark. You can barely see the streak. If you think the nail biting is getting. Then I would see a doct or about.

Go to your health food store & ask one of the people there. You could also go on line and check it out...or the library is a good source.

When I was little and bit mine, my mother told me that there were worms under my nails. My best friends daughter did the same and we told her... both of us immediately broken of the habit! Might work if you haven't tried it yet. I'm not certain about the coloring though. Have you gone to the dr. yet?
