My husband has recently started snoring more often and louder. It is not seasonal allergies and he says he doesn't have any congestion or anything. I am a very light sleeper and have trouble falling back to sleep once awake. Suggestions? Last night I wore ear plugs and they helped some, but they always end up falling out.
How do you know its not allergies? Snoring gets worse this time of year. My husband started using the netti pot and it really helps with the snoring. Also, experiment with different sleeping positions. Lying on the right side works for my husband.

The Snore Spray and melt away strips work like a CHARM! I buy the spray at Wal-Mart, it's like $10 and I can find the strips at CVS. What they do is keep the air passages moist, so it's not a chemical or anything like that. My hubby says they taste great too! Good luck!

My husband swears by BreatheRight strips. He also says the generic ones don't work as well. I have to say, they seem to help. Sleeping on the side also helps.
One obvious factor is weight loss. You didn't mention if you husband was carrying a few extra pounds, but losing weight REALLY helps with snoring!!!
Good luck!

Hi S.,
Snoring cannot occur if someone is in their most restful sleep. That means he's not getting his rest. Is there something going on that is on his mind? Sometimes it's as simple as talking it out.
I give my husband a product called RestEZ that is primarily Valerian root. It's not a sleeping aid but it takes the edge of any anxiety and allows him to sleep normally. It has no side effects at all. He wakes up rested. My husband is quite high strung and always thinking. I sometimes think he is planning things in his sleep. This has been a God-send for us.
Hope I helped!

I don't have an answer for you, just wanted you to know I'm going through the same thing... Over the past 9 months I've had a lot of issues with my sleeping (insomnia issues) and my husband has always snored.. Normally I just kick him and he'll stop (lol, I know not nice)..He doesn't have sleep apnea, he's in great shape and no health issues.. He's just a super busy person during the day, and a heavyyyyyyy sleeper at night.. Nowadays I can't even fall asleep if he's sleeping in the room (I also have a floor fan to drown out the noise)... He now sleeps in the guest bedroom because I need to get my sleep...Earplugs never worked that well for me.. They always fell out or I could still hear.. Good luck!!!

If I wake up I also have a hard time falling back to sleep with my snoring, sawing logs husband. It was becoming a major problem.
I have used ear plugs for the last year and it works perfect for me. Maybe too much so. I hear nothing. I use the kind that the NASCAR teams uses. I change them about once a week. Bought them in bulk for wholesale.
You really need to squeez and push them in and then hold your finger so when they expand they expand in the ear cannal and can't push up and out because your finger is holding them back until they expand. Sorry if the explanation isn't clear. I have never tried to explain how I learn not to have them fall out. :)
Good luck.

Hi S.,
I usually use the Breathe Right strips, and my wife says she doesn't notice me snoring, so I guess they work good enough for her. They are pretty cheap, so they are definitely worth a try.

Maybe he should go to the doctor. Videotape him snoring so he can take it with him -- and for a laugh.
Nighty night!

I seen a commercial for a head wrap thingy. It's called "My Snoring Solution." It sells for around $90. If all else fails, he might want to try this thing.

Breathe Right strips usually work and keep loud snoring down. There is also a Breathe Right spray. However, he now "huffs and puffs". I nudge him so he sleeps facing away from me and not breathing down the back of my neck, LOL. Kate Gosselin's quip to Jon "“stop breathing so loud” comes to mind, I know.
My mom used to keep water by the bed to splash my dad. My sister used to put a tennis ball in a sewn-on pocket on the back of her hubby's PJs. Is this a rite of passage for all wives?

If your earplugs are falling out, they're probably not in enough. Twist the plug as small as you can then hold it between your fingers while you pull your earlobe down & out with the other hand. Try it a few times. They go in almost all the way! I have used them for years, but just figured out that trick a year ago or so. I usually only put one in the ear that's not on the pillow.
Good luck! We're working on it here too!

I use earplugs every night. I'm not sure what kind you used, but I use some made for women. They are pink and I think they're called Sleep Pretty In Pink. Yep......here they are
I just buy them at Walmart and they work great for me! I also started going to bed before my husband with the ear plugs in. Then, when he comes to bed, I'm already asleep with ear plugs in and I rarely EVER wake up. Good luck! So frustrating, I know!!! LOL

He might have a Deviated Septum. He should go see an Ear, Nose, and Throat. I had sinus surgery with Dr Stephen Mitchell in St Thomas, he is one of the best. He can just have a CT to help see what it is. He can also try breathe-right strips on his nose at night to see if that works. You could get a noise machine, it is a white noise sound that could help you sleep better. Make him sleep on his stomache, not his back and that could help. Have him use a nasal mist right before bed like Nasonex to open his nasal pasages. Good luck

My husband snores when sleeping on his back. I have tried everything and have gone to earplugs. Alcohol will also make you snore. I also take a health supplement called Gabamax which helps ME sleep so I don't hear him. I get it at health food stores, my Nurse Practioner carries it and the Naturapath in town does as well.. Hope that helps.

I too have a husband who snores. I use one of those white noise sound machines that they have for babies. I like the ocean sound. I also use a portable cd player with a soothing, relaxing sleep inducing cd. I even take these things with when we travel. Indispensible.
Also you should check to be sure he doesn't have sleep apnea, where they stop breathing momentarily and then gasp for air repeatedly over the course of the night.

You may want to send him to an ENT doctor. My 10 year old just got his tonsils and adnoids out on March 18th and he has totally quit snoring and the doctor said tonsils are a huge factor in most snorers and having someone's tonsils out can make them a nicer and different person. He said my son getting his tonsils out would definitely change him for the better (because like someone else said when you snore - you are not getting very good rest) and when people get more rest, they tend to be nicer and more productive. You may think I'm crazy but this came from a doctor who has been doing this for over 40 years!

Is he sleeping on his back when he's snoring? Try making him sleep on his side instead. My husband will snore if he sleeps on his back, so I have to tell him to stop! haha
If that doesn't help, he might need to see an ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) doctor. They can make sure there is nothing wrong, and suggest other things to try.

My husband occasionally snores and therefore I am not used to it. So when the time coems around I get really irritated. This happens if he has had a little too much to drink or if he is just totally exhausted form overworking. I turn a fan on right next to me and fall asleep to the sound of the fan. It is very soothing and also blocks out other frustrating noises that go no in th emiddle of the night. I enjoyed the relaxation the noise of the fan made that I now sleep with it everynight.Goodluck!

Has he changed anything else in his routine lately? I only ask because my husband ONLY snores when he has had a couple of beers. He by NO means drinks too much! But on the occasion that he has had 2 or 3 in the hours before bedtime, he does tend to snore. Other times.. almost never (or at least I don't hear it, lol).
Also, My mother is a very loud snorer. And she is even "worse" when she is heavier. Has your hubby gained weight recently?
