L.,
My husband and I spent a week in Cozumel a few years ago. We got a great deal thru Apple Vacations- left from B-more however so I'm not sure if they even operate from here or not. Anyway, we stayed at the Iberostar Resort, which is all-inclusive. I think a good deal for an island like Cozumel. It was very reasonable. Our best day if you are going without kids and enjoy cold libations was spent renting a car...we had a pink convertible bug which seemed like a Fred Flintstone car- stripped down with no seatbelts (they were all like that at the time, so just be prepared) We went to the Mayan Ruins and hiked about for a bit- visited the Rock of Fertility...not sure you need this :-) There are harmless, yet rather big lizards everywhere around the ruins. After that, we hit the back side of the island- there are bars/restaurants more like huts every couple of hundred feet. We stopped at nearly every one for a drink or bit of food. I highly recommend this- it is the best way to talk to locals. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. We had lunch at a place...had "overlook" in the name. This was probably the most substantial place and about half way down. Definately stop at the reggae place as long as you are comfortable. We met the owner who gave us free drinks and talked to us for a long time about the island.
The island is only a few miles longs and the road makes a loop, so you can't get lost. This back side as I call it faces the golf, and has a rocky rough shoreline, which is why no resorts. It is absolutely breathtaking though.

I saw the jewelry comment on another response and yes, I left with a silver choker and slide- you can totally negotiate- got it for really cheap at the marketplace near where the ferries come in.

One last comment is on the snorkleing and diving. My husband and I scuba dive and Cozumel has been among one of my favorite places to dive. The underwater world is beautiful there. So even if you don't dive, I would recommend taking a snorkeling day. Go with a tour operator though because Cozumel is known for strong currents. When diving, you drift dive (no swimming you just hang out and ride the current) and the boat follows you. I mention this just so you don't jump in whereever and come up somewhere else. Could be disasterous.

HAVE A BLAST! WE LOVED IT THERE!

I don't know if it is still there, but there is a mini golf place in the middle of the downtown area. It is run by an American couple. There also was a restaurant called Primo's that was great. I haven't been since the 2000 New Year's celebration, so things may have changed. There was also a beach (maybe San Francisco Beach) that there was a pet monkey that ran around and he was HILARIOUS! We had a great time there!

We went last Summer to Cozumel on a Carnival cruise out of Galveston. How are you traveling? What types of activities are you looking for?

I don't have so much advice for fun things to do, but I highly recommend that you take an antibiotic before and during your trip to prevent a bacterial infection. I stayed in a very nice area of Puerto Vallarta, but still came home with a severe version of salmonella, which is caused by undercooked food or cross-contamination (not the water because I was REALLY careful about that). The infection then sprouted into viral meningitis (very dangerous) and put me in the hospital for 3 days once I returned home. My doctor said I was lucky I made it home befroe I really got sick, because you do NOT want to land in a Mexican hospital. I don't want to scare you, but educate you. I highly recommend you call your doctor prior to leaving to get a prescription for an antibiotic. It stinks to have to medicate for a vacation, but trust me, better to be safe in Mexico than sorry. Hope this helps.

I've never been to Cozumel, but wanted to share a resource someone just told me about. I'm heading to Seattle and Vancouver, and someone told me to check BiddingforTravel.com and then bid for hotel stays on Priceline.com. BiddingforTravel.com will help you work the system with Priceline so that you don't overbid. I got a $36/night stay at a Doubletree in Seattle and a $60/night 4 star hotel in downtown Vancouver. The DoubleTree is going for $150/night and the Vancouver hotel (Pacific Palisades) is going for $120/night, so both wins are saving me money. I looked at BiddingforTravel and they only list one Cozumel hotel that has come up on Priceline -- the 3 star Playa Azul Golf & Beach Hotel. Priceline might offer others, but that's the only one that BiddingforTravel people have gotten so far.

It took me a little time to understand the BiddingforTravel.com process, so if you decide to give it a try and want some help, let me know.

Good luck, and have fun!
