My husband and I spent a week in Cozumel a few years ago. We got a great deal thru Apple Vacations- left from B-more however so I'm not sure if they even operate from here or not. Anyway, we stayed at the Iberostar Resort, which is all-inclusive. I think a good deal for an island like Cozumel. It was very reasonable. Our best day if you are going without kids and enjoy cold libations was spent renting a car...we had a pink convertible bug which seemed like a Fred Flintstone car- stripped down with no seatbelts (they were all like that at the time, so just be prepared) We went to the Mayan Ruins and hiked about for a bit- visited the Rock of Fertility...not sure you need this :-) There are harmless, yet rather big lizards everywhere around the ruins. After that, we hit the back side of the island- there are bars/restaurants more like huts every couple of hundred feet. We stopped at nearly every one for a drink or bit of food. I highly recommend this- it is the best way to talk to locals. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. We had lunch at a place...had "overlook" in the name. This was probably the most substantial place and about half way down. Definately stop at the reggae place as long as you are comfortable. We met the owner who gave us free drinks and talked to us for a long time about the island.
The island is only a few miles longs and the road makes a loop, so you can't get lost. This back side as I call it faces the golf, and has a rocky rough shoreline, which is why no resorts. It is absolutely breathtaking though.
I saw the jewelry comment on another response and yes, I left with a silver choker and slide- you can totally negotiate- got it for really cheap at the marketplace near where the ferries come in.
One last comment is on the snorkleing and diving. My husband and I scuba dive and Cozumel has been among one of my favorite places to dive. The underwater world is beautiful there. So even if you don't dive, I would recommend taking a snorkeling day. Go with a tour operator though because Cozumel is known for strong currents. When diving, you drift dive (no swimming you just hang out and ride the current) and the boat follows you. I mention this just so you don't jump in whereever and come up somewhere else. Could be disasterous.
HAVE A BLAST! WE LOVED IT THERE!
