My Husband is also a mechanic. He thinks the sensors may need to be replaced. He said there are speedometer and odometer sensors on the transmission. Hope this helps.
Ok i'm married to a mechanic but he does not know the answer to this question and neither does his brother. So if anyone has a guy they can ask this question to please send me an answer. I have a 1999 jeep cheeroke and for some reason the speed dom. And the millage dom. Stop working does any one know why this would happen?

Have them check your sending unit.....the one for your speed and mileage controls could be out.
And I didn't have to ask a guy. LOL
The cluster could be bad, the cables could be bad, or the gears in the transmission could be bad. It's one of the main diagnostic things in the manual. If you don't have it, I suggest buying one. (We ALWAYS buy them...of course we also only buy cars we can fix ourselves...toyotas, bmw's...) If your mechanic husband can't figure it out, try calling cartalk (on NPR).
All I know is that about a year ago the speedometer, gas gauge & all that stuff on the dashboard of my 95 dodge intrepid quit working. I took it to a shop and they had to replace some sort of computer in it.
Not sure if it would be your problem, but it's one thing to check.
Good luck!!
This happened to my old Toyota Celica and it turned out to be a blown motherboard in the dash. I couldn't find a replacement so I had to junk the entire car.
I did a search thru google and found Automotive Forums (http://www.automotiveforms.com) and they have all kinds of cars and questions on there. A lot of speedometer ?s and odometer ?s but not both together. My friend had a similar thing with speedometer and gas gauge, can't remember what her hubby (also mechanic) did to fix it, but it could be any number of things. Sensors, circuits, etc., so I'd suggest looking in the manual as well, (maybe online), or borrowing from the library, or jumping on the AF.com and see what they suggest.
Sorry couldn't be much help, but I'm not a mechanic, but I have had my fair share of things going wrong with cars...and fixing them with my dad.
Take care,
God Bless,

if its a 99 generally the newer cars run on computers not like the old cars... take it to the dealer they will check it out....
my boyfriend and his brother dabble in mechanics...they suggested checking the speed odometer cable.
hope this helps.
