I Have Molluscum!!!!

My daughter had molluscum and is finally starting to get over it. Thankfully she only has a few dots left.
About 2 weeks ago I noticed some bumps on my hand. Today I went to the doctor to get them checked out and guess what? I apparently caught mulluscum from my daughter. The doctor gave me my first liquid nitrogen treatment to freeze them. When I got home my husband yelled at me for doing that because everyone we asked (I asked 4 different doctors) about my daughter's mulluscum, all said to leave them alone and that they would go away on there own in about 6 months to 2 years. It has been almost a year and my daughter still has a few but they are mostly gone. I am so afraid of reinfecting her that I wanted to nip them in the bud and just start the liquid nitrogen treatment. My husband does not want me to continue treatment because of possible scarring. I care much more about reinfecting my daughter than about some possible scars on my hands. Has anyone been through this? Did you go for treatment or leave them alone? Thanks so much for your responses.
oh, and I now am going to have to wear gloves when bathing my daughter, :sigh:

What can I do next?

Our two youngest had it. My husband and I never got it while they had it or after.

We tried various things: Rx cream----did nothing; beetlejuice----hurt, burned very much afterward.

One thing our dermatologist told us to do was to put liquid bandage over the spots. I'm not telling you or anyone else to do this, so ASK your dermatologist first before you try it. Your case (size and location of the bumps) is different than ours, and you should definitely seek medical advice from your doctor before you try anything new.

In our case, it kept the bumps covered and seemed to help dry them out over time.

If your doctor tells you it's okay to try this, make sure you label that particular bottle for molluscum treatment only so no one else in the family uses it.

I do think your husband's reaction of yelling at you is a bit extreme. Six months to two years is a long time to deal with a condition, particularly one that can be spread and especially when it is on your hands. Think about it---you use your hands for just about everything you do. Ask your husband how he feels about you touching him on various parts of his body and possibly spreading it and see how he feels about treatment then.

Best to you

Without a doubt I would treat this. The cantherone (beetle juice) treatment was very effective for my son, who had this 2 years ago. There is no way i would let one of my kids or myself walk around with this disgusting, contagious virus in a visible place. Stick to your guns and continue the treatment if you want to, and remind your husband that he definitely doesn't want to catch this from you either!

I'd do what your doctor recommends. If my husband yelled at me about it, I'd tell him to kick rocks.

Your husband doesn't have the right to dictate what you do to YOUR hands. It's not his call, R.! It's YOURS! You keep doing what you're doing. Even if you didn't have such a good reason as you have, I wouldn't want them on me for 2 years!

And by the way, my son had it for two years on his chest and 15 years later, has scars. And we left it alone. So your husband saying that freezing them will cause scars doesn't know that you wouldn't have scars ANYWAY.

You need to tell him to stop telling you what to do with your body!

no clue what to do about molluscum, but i know what i'd do with a husband who is enough of an arsehole to yell at me over a treatment i chose for a condition that is mine AND could affect the rest of the family.
there would potential for possible scarring for sure.

If they were on my hands I would definitely address the issue. Your hands touch your face, and your kids, everything. My son had them and I just can't leave well enough alone. They grossed me out. So I tried everything over the counter. Nothing worked. So when he was asleep I would sanitize the area and then scrape, pop them, sanitize again and bandage. I did this on the big ones and only dealt with them for about 2 months. Only 1 scarred and its so tiny that its hard to notice. I'm sure tons of people are yelling at me and that I should have just left them. We didn't deal with any infections. Once the big ones were gone, the smaller ones just seemed to go away on their own. He had maybe 8. I never got them neither did my daughter or husband.

We didn't freeze them with nitrogen, but used a combo dermatologist treatment of cantheridin (?) and wart treatment. It irritated the surface of the bumps so that the body could take over naturally. And take some good probiotics, eat and sleep well, so your immune system is up to snuff. They will go away on their own... eventually. My son's did. But only after he caught them on something and ripped the edge of them (the one on his finger, I don't remember what he hit it on but it scraped it; the one on his waist he scraped with either his waistband or his belt, I can't remember now). Daughter had them by then (I didn't realize what it was when my son had it... only a few here or there and started on his hand so I thought it was just a wart). Hers was in her hair and she scratched it with her hairbrush and it got infected. She developed them on her neck and leg/knee as well. (probably a grand total of about 8 bumps for her; son maybe had 4).

There are cases where kids become just covered with it. But I think those incidences are rare. And probably have an underlying reason they get so bad (poor immune system, or weak immune system from fighting other problems).

I wouldn't freak out. But you do need to be careful. I personally found that the more I stressed over it, the more prevalent they became (or the more paranoid I was, maybe both). Stress weakens your immune system. When I finally made my daughter an appointment with the dermatologist and we got in and got treatment, my stress dropped to nothing, and every bump I had that I thought was it disappeared. Did I ever have them? I don't know. But I never did after...

Hi R.,

Good nutrition from the inside helps tons, basically speeds up the healing process, and clean food. High grade tea tree oil will clear it up. Seen it!

Try apple cider vinegar. It worked for my son. Soak a small gauze with the vinegar, place on the molluscum, and cover with a band aid/tape. Leave on over night and then repeat the following night until they are gone. Pretty sure we only did it for 3 nights. No scarring either. My son did say that it stung a little but not too bad. Good luck!

My daughter has dealt with molluscum for about 5 years or so. We tried to freeze one of her first ones and it did nothing. Because they were all near her eyes we left them alone. The only one we ever treated after that was one that got infected after we were at a waterpark. It had to be scraped and frozen. It was extremely painful. She has a small scar (in addition to some small scars from ones that got rubbed off). She was completely free of the ones on her face for several months before she had a few develop on her butt and one on her leg behind her knee. We have left them all alone. After her experience with the infected one she doesn't want any of them treated. And our doctor and the dermatologist we saw at Mayo Clinic both said leaving them alone is the best thing to do. Because it is viral there is no guarantee that any treatment is going to work. No one else had any develop the entire time she had them on her face.

My son has had some on his back and side near his arm pit. He also seems to be developing some around his eye. All of his showed during the time my daughter was molluscum free. We have just left them alone.

I have had some on my legs and a couple on my face. Mine all showed up when my daughter was molluscum free. I've left them all alone. I have no interest in freezing them. I do have some scars on my neck from when I had some skin tags/moles frozen years ago. I have no interest in having anything frozen again.

My husband has never had them.
