you should aslo do some pricing. sounds like a cute idea but anyone can serve a taco bar at a party. you'd have to find a niche. mini tacos, unique combinations, etc.

you should also price out supplies - shells, tortillas, lettuce, tomatoes, sauces, toppings, warmers, transport dishes, etc. you'll need a price point so that you can decide on what to offer, price, etc.

Usually, if you cater, it needs to be done in a health department approved kitchen......

You would need to have a business license, tax number, separate kitchen for preparing meals, etc. Under most circumstances, you can't serve to the public (for income) from the kitchen in your home. You could have the home and kitchen inspected by the health department, but almost always you need a commercial kitchen. Something detached from your home. It's not so easy as just having an idea. There are food safety, health department, sterilization, licenses and certifications to take care of.

An idea is great, but you need to do A LOT of research to do this legally. Contact your local health department and business association...to start.

I would do your research on how many people already do this. I am guessing this kind of food is quite popular in your area. If you were to come here you would have a definite niche b/c nobody is doing anything like this andyou can't find good mexican anywhere. That being said there is always a place for exceptional food. If yours is much better than others than you will get the business.

I suggest using social media as much as you can to get the word out. Small businesses underutilize this IMO.

Keep in mind also that there are a lot of local restaurants in Arlington/Dallas area that do the same thing. The market is saturated with places that could cater a small party with tacos/fajitas. Take a real look at the market in the area and see if that business model would be successful. Discuss how your food would be different then the other similar places.

There was just a change in the Texas state law to allow people to sell food that they have prepared in their own kitchens (vs a commercial kitchen). Look into that because there have been a lot of articles written about it lately in the FW Star Telegram. You might get some other ideas! good luck!

Hi G.,
My husbands good friends had their daughters bautizma a few weeks ago and they hired a lady that made tacos! She had al pastor, fajita, tongue and barbacoa. We told her what kind of meat and there you go! She had the toppings and everything. It was genius! Rico tacos and we didn't even have to wait in line! She's in fort worth and she charged 400 for about 5 hrs and it was so worth it! Go for it! And pm me your info in case we choose to do that at our next party!

there is a local lady here that started her business by selling tacos out of a catering truck at lunch time. she now owns her own restaurant! I think a truck would be the way to go, that way you're mobile and can go to where the business is. this would give you lots of visibility and word of mouth would get you party catering. good luck!

You need to call the local inspectors office and then the city offices and find out about health inspections for your kitchen, to see if your home is in a zone that would allow you to do this, etc...it is hard to go to all the work and dreaming of something if it can't be. Logically you can request you be allowed to have a home business even if the zoning prohibits it but it takes time and patience. The kitchen will have to have major renovations to fit in with the standards of a restaurant. But if it's something you really plan on staying with and enjoying for years the investment is worth it if you can get the license.
