I Thought Scissors Made Today Were Universal?

I know I'm asking another lefty question, but I hope that's ok.

I was under the impression that scissors manufactured today are designed to be used with either hand. My lefty son has always just used the same scissors as the rest of this. Is there a lefty pair I should buy for him?

If it matters, we have a few pairs of Fiskars for the boys to use.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

He has some homework to do that involves cutting, so I'm going to have to pay attention tonight. I wonder if it's the Fiskars or if he really is using his right hand. Ok, bad mom moment, because this is something I really should know without having to think so hard :-)

It is only recently that we feel fairly certain he really is a lefty. So it really is possible that he's just using his right hand to cut.

Anyway, thank you for the info!

Well, I am left handed and have yet to come across a pair not labelled as left handed (the green handles) that work in my left hand. That said, I learned very early to use right handed scissors (using my right hand) and have not used a pair of lefty scissors in decades. However, my teachers NEVER tried to force me to be right handed.

My friends that are left handed buy left handed scissors and they're right along side the right handed scissors.

My lefty just started kindergarten. We have never had lefty scissors. I think most of our scissors are Fisker but not all of them. He seems to do fine.

My older lefty cuts with her right and my younger lefty cuts with her left. Yes, there are specific left handed scissors. I found a large pair in Office Depot and I (right) cannot use them.

Bummer...we were just in San Francisco and I didn't know this store existed.

Left handed scissors are different however if your son is using right handed scissors without a problem then I'd let it be. When my oldest went to nursery school she couldn't use the scissors the teacher gave to her. I spoke with the teacher the next day and it turned out the teacher saw she was left handed and gave her left handed scissors.

Left handed people tend to have a more accidents than right handed people. It makes sense sense. Most things produced are geared towards right handed people.

If he can learn to do some tings with both hands, he will be prepared for all sorts of situations.

I am left handed and I cannot use all scissors, some really need to be "left handed" scissors. Those little Fiskars scissors always work for me along with the large Fiskars scissors for cutting fabrics otherwise I need to search for left handed ones.

Honestly, for his sanity, teach him to cut with his right hand. Apparently it isn't that hard.

I have a spring loaded pair that works with both hands but they are quite pricy and not durable.

No they are different.
It's a lot harder to use right handed scissors with a left hand.
The blades are set differently.

My husband is left handed and he has his own scissors.
I've used them sometimes but I'll use my left hand when I do.

I'm left-handed.....

for years, I've used universal scissors.... I do have a nice pair of left-handed Fiskars for cutting material and such.....

Frankly, I've gotten so used to the cutting blade being on the "other" side (with standard scissors), that I have a hard time using left-handed scissors.... (when I'm cutting on a line, I need to be precise and watch where the cutting point is.... and I've found the left-handed ones to be awkward, since I've gotten used to compensating for the right handed scissors.)
