Ikea Ektorp Sofa - Does Anyone Own This and Recommend It?

We are looking to buy a new sofa and I thought the Ikea's Ektorp Sofa might be priced right for us and work well for our family. I just just wondering if anyone has this and either loves it or hates it? We had a nice leather sectional but it won't fit in the family room of our new house. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

I don't recommend any sofa from Ikea, unless it's really cheap and you plan to replace it in a few years.

Ikea is a great place to shop for lots of things, but not sofas, IMO. When I bought a sofa from Ikea, within a year the color had faded and it looked shabby within 2 years.

Don't know about the Ektorp Sofa though.

i agree, unless you are looking to replace it in a few years, i would pass on it, unless they have significantly changed them in the last few years. we had one several years ago that broke within months (like the leg base cracked). also, DH used to work for ikea (so we knew what we were getting at least) and he said that was a common problem for that couch. he would get lots of calls and returns for that reason (we still got it, we needed something cheap, and it didn't need to last at that point)

I gotta go against the grain on this :-) We got one about 5.5 years ago & still love it. Ours has the sofa bed in it & we've used that part a few times but not a ton. The actual sofa is still in good shape though we are on our second slipcover. For us it has held up pretty well - 3 kiddos, 2 nieces (staying with us a lot) a dog, 2 cats & us.

We bought ours last year and it's still holding up just fine. We have two cats and a three year-old so the removable cover on the sofa and the cushions is a life saver. The only complaint comes from my husband who is tall and likes to stretch out on the sofa. No one else can fit on there if he is laying down like that. :)

I have one and it suits our needs. Our two dogs ruined our expensive set set in five years. Now with an elderly person, a 21 month old and one on the way the ektorp has been meeting our needs for three years. I can remove the cover and wash it. That for this time in our lives us perfect. I would live a higher end sofa (I miss our old set) but speaking practically the ektorp is comfortable and practical.

I see a lot of gently used sofas on craigslist.. usually higher end and pretty well priced.

The ikea sofas I see are usually cute for a few months, then they get saggy and out of shape.

I think I'm in the minority but I had an ektorp sofa for about 5 years and LOVED it. This was before kids and we got rid of it to make way for a sectional. But I have to say I found it super soft and comfy and loved napping on it (ah, those were the days!). We did also purchase the ektorp love seat in leather bug that was a huge mistake. The leather was hard and never broke in and got soft. Don't buy the leather!

If I want furniture that I don't feel bad throwing away and kind of expect to throw away I will then go with Ikea as the wood they use is either soft or pressed. The springs are not quality metal and the fabric does need a slipcover as most of the fabric don't take to cleaning well. The stuffing or filling is loose and they use dense foam that looses it's memory quickly. If you have children and pets this will have the same life as a high end unless they are a little older and understand not flopping and general gentle manners. I would compare it with a warehouse sofa from either sams or costco as some have comparable price but the quality and comfort so different.

We have it. It's decent for the price, but the slip cover shoes pretty much any stains and it's a pain in the neck to get it on and off to wash it. I probably wouldn't purchase it again - I'd recommend going to a "real" furniture store and looking around the clearance area for a better material for kids.
