I know nothing about your situation but the description by MandA M makes it sound like what Missouri did quite some time ago with Southwester Bell. They made them lease lines to other companies at below cost. So a lot of people jumped to the lower priced lines. The problem was Southwestern Bell did not have to add new lines and features and didn't have the money to do so. The service got so bad because there was little to no maintenance that most revolted and got the law repealed so they no longer had to lease the lines.

I am only saying this because if it is the same deal you need to be prepared that regardless if you stay with ComEd or go with the competitors you may be in for power outages like you have never seen because there won't be money to upgrade or even maintain the grid. I hope not but it is possible.

We are much happier spending an extra 10 dollars a month to have reliable service and having the option of Uverse vs Charter cable. That would not have happened under the old law.

I went with Integrys as they were offereing over 13% savings. Now I hear that IGS is offering 17%. We've been getting our gas from another supplier for a few years now and it's worked out well.

The ability for consumers to pay less for electricity and/or natural gas is *not* a scam. With energy deregulation, ComEd (and/or Nicor) is no longer a monopoly and consumers can choose who they receive their electricity (and/or natural gas) supply from and how much they pay for it. The delivery of the electricity and/or gas still comes from ComEd or Nicor. ComEd and Nicor gas still read the meters, send the bills, supply the energy, and come out for any service related issues or outages.

There are several retail energy providers that are licensed by the Illinois Commerce Commission to provide electricity and/or gas services and Ambit Energy is one of these.

I am a consultant for Ambit, so I know my opinion is not unbiased, but I honestly believe that Ambit is a great company with solid leadership and I know for a fact that all of my customers are happy with the savings and service.

We switched to First Energy. And a lot of our neighbors have switched.

We're in the middle of a legal issue with Com Ed (long, long story), so our billing isn't accurate yet. But my neighbor who switched is saving $160/month!
Same billing, same support structure as always. Just lower bills. The service still comes through ComEd, so if there are power issues, you'll be serviced through them. It's also worth noting that they are legally required to extend the same service levels and response times to non-ComEd customers as direct. Meaning, they can't blow you off because you switched.
I'd say do it and don't look back.

I was forced to change due to voters of my town approving it... and it is NOT cheaper. I would recommend sticking with ComEd.

It is a scam. You are paying the new company and com ed. Your price is only gaurenteed for a short period of time and then it is going to go up so the company can make money...they are only offering lower prices to get people switch.
Call and ask the right questions and you will find all of this out just like i did.

Yes, I switched to Direct Energy over the summer. Even though it doesn't feel like your bill is smaller, when you do the math and compare Com Ed's rate each month to the rate you are getting with the new company, you will see the savings. Go to the CUB (Citizens Utility Board) website and check out all the companies and find the one that is right for you. I signed up my parents also and went with Direct Energy because they had a great senior rate, lower than the rate they offer everyone. WGN radio is advertising ISG I think, and if you use some word, like "WGN radio", you get a rate that is 17% lower I think. You'd have to look into that one as I'm not sure of the exact deal. No Cons yet. I haven't noticed any difference. I am going to look into changing my natural gas provider, but haven't got there yet. I guess it works in the same way.
BTW... CUB is also good for finding savings on your cell phone bill and your home telephone. I switched my local long distance and long distance from AT&T to Pioneer and am paying pennies for my long distance now and there aren't so many extra fees. I heard that Pioneer would soon offer local service also so I will look into that. Hope that helps.
