Does anybody know of a reasonable and reputable place that I can get a couple of screen windows. I do not have any frames, but I can measure the storms to get the size. I rent a home and have no screens for any of the windows. The landlord is unwilling to purchase any. We have air conditioning, and sometimes open the windows during the day, but once the sun goes down we close everything up so the mosquitoes and other critters won't come in. I much prefer to have fresh air than use the air conditioning. I live in the NW burbs near Schaumburg and such. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My husband and I went to Home Depot and they showed us how to make them. It's not too hard and it wasn't really expensive. They sell kits with all the stuff you need.
Most larger Ace Hardware stores will make them for you. Also, there are small adjustable screens that are made to fit in the window and will fit any window size. Ace Hardware is a good place to start.
Places like Menard's, Home Depot and Lowes all have screen kits.....some have "ready made" sizes others are cut to fit. The cut to fit are easy to deal with (you can cut them with tin snips which you can purchase there, they look and work like scissors the clerks can help you find what you need) then make them yourself....it will be about $20 per window plus the tools....or use the adjustable screens...these can be found at KMart, WalMart and the home centers as well....
Does seem like your landlord should do this. However, I'm replacing a screen too and a handyman recommended a family-run hardware store in the city's northwest side at the corner of Clark and Devon. I've tried another hardware store with no success.
What you're looking for is something called a "sash window screen". They are adjustable and can fit into any window, so you can take them with you when you go, or move them from room to room in your house. I did a really quick google search and found http://www.portascreen.co.uk/ This site will show you what you need, however, they're in England so I would imagine the shipping is prohibitive, although perhpas they have distributors in the US. When we moved into a house 1/2 of the screens were missing. We bought screen kits at Menards. They were inexpensive and easy to assemble. You may want to check them out. Hope this helps!

I don't know if you can find them in the suburbs (maybe at Home Depot?) but when we lived in the city the hardware stores all sold screens for renters - they are adjustable pieces that go under a double-hung window (or in the side of a side-sliding window). At ace hardware and maybe even Menards or Home depot, you can buy some screens for your window, it is a wood frame with the mesh and they slide apart and are about the height of an 8x10 picture frame but expandable for the width of a normal size window. I'm not sure but years back Jewels used to carry them. I hope this helps they are really inexpensive and last for quite a while.
I agree with Kelly...Call your village or municipality office...I will bet it is code and yuor landlord must pay for them, be prepared to have them inspect the property if he is prickly about it.....as well Illinois tenant landlord regulations state that after you have requested said repairs , if not completed in a timely manner you can have them done and deduct that amount from your rent.And know that he may retaliate by not renewing the lease or other needed repairs....i do not know why landlords do not keep thier properties up to code and give thier tenants such a hard time....you are after all paying for his property
You can just buy a temp screen. You open the window put the screen in and put the window down on the top of the window. Very inexpensive and can go with you when you move.
Also remember to put up screens you will still need the landlords permission because will be altering his property by screwing screens to the frame of his windows. He could keep part of your deposit when you move saying he did not want the screens and it will cost him to take them down and fix the screw holes. (Just a Warning)

If you or your husband are handy, you can get a screen making kit at Loews or Home Depot. I think it's pretty expensive to have someone make them for you. My husband is currently replacing 90% of the screens in the home we bought last year and the screens he is making are working out great. You can also take them with you when you leave as to not invest your money in someone elses home! :)
Start by calling your village or township office. My guess is that screens are required by code and your landlord has to pay for them.
Try your local Ace hardware, they may be able to help.
Try a neighborhood hardware store. If you can't find a mom & pop the try ace or true value.
How rude of your landlord. Just go to a hardware store and buy 2 sliding screens to "fit in" the window well. When you move, take them with you. You could always use them in a garage or somewhere.
You can buy kits to make screen windows at Menards. I would take a look at them. Screen windows are very expensive to replace. We looked at getting new one for seom missing in our home and they started at $200. You can also buy slip in screens that fit between the bottom of the window while it is up and the window sill. I think the kits go for about $20 and the slip in screens can go from $5 to $20 each depending on the size.
