Infant Ear Piercing

I know most people will think that ear piercing is a decision that the child should make on their own when they are older. Here's the thing. The percentage of girls with their ears pierced is very high and it's not a life altering decision that parents can't make in my opinion. I am interested in hearing from parents who have had their infant girl's ears pierced. I wouldlike to get it done. Who does it? Do they do it at the hospital or do I have to take my baby to Claire's....which makes me uncomfortable and I wouldn't do that. Has anyone had their baby girl's ear pierced and had problems? No problems? Love it? Hate it? Any advice would be helpful.

What can I do next?

I waited until my daughter was 4 years old. She always tugged at her ears when she was a baby & I was scared she would pull them out. I felt so bad for her when she had them done. She really cried & will unfortunately always remember the pain. I was able to calm her down by buying her something. What is even more unfortuante, is I got it done at WALMART & 2 women did it at the same time. One got it right on the hole & the other lady got right under the hole. They look so bad. The one side is so low, I am scared it is going to tear. So finally after 3 months of debating, I have decided to let them close & get it redone. So, the trauma worsens. My advice: DO NOT GET IT DONE AT WALMART.

My daughter is 7 1/2 months old. We had her ears pierced at the Drs. It was $35 and I felt so much better having it done there then in the mall. We go to Nadal Ped.

Hi,
I am of Cuban descent and our tradition is to pierce the ears of our little girls when their umbilical cord falls off, so my grandmother, mother, myself and my daughters were pierced at about two weeks. I'm from Key West and at the time I was growing up, piercing a newborn's ears was not unusual so it was done all the time in a doctor's office. Now a lot of doctors won't do it and the ones that do, recommend that you wait until the first round of vacinations. If you can't get it done by your pediatrician, some of the nicer jewerly stores will do it. I won't go to a place in the mall, because they'll hire anyone and I wouldn't trust putting a permenant hole in my child's ears to a teenager.

I think it is better, in my opinion, to pierce them young, because they don't mess with them because to them, they've always been there. All teenage girls want their ears pierced and I was so glad it was already done for me.

I used to be a prof. piercer, and I just want to throw my two cents in and say that if you get your little girl's ears pierced, don't use a piercing gun, there are many negative effects, the main one being that it's not sanitary; they use the same gun for every ear, and it's impossible to properly sanitize it. A hollow, single use needle would be the best, but I am unsure what they use at the doctors office, but I'm pretty sure that at Wal Mart, Claire's, and other places like that use piercing guns. You have to have a piercing license to pierce in the state of Florida. Just thought you might like to know this. Good luck.

i waited til our daughter was six and she ended up not letting me change them when i was suppose to and now they have grown up...if i had the choice to do it again it would be when she was little...now she wont let us go try it again...when they are little its easier to take care of....walmart does it, they use 2 people so that they get both ears at the same time...thats what we did and my girl did fine getting them done it was just after the 6 weeks when we were trying to change them....

I have a little boy so I can't personally comment on what I have done. However, I believe your pediatrician will ask that you wait atleast until after her first round of shots. I believe some pediatricians offices do it but I could be wrong about that. I had my ears pierced when I was 3 months, I'm happy my parents had them done so soon in life. Good thing because no matter how long I keep an earring out of them, they will NOT close up! :) If I had a little girl, I'd get her ears pierced early in life, but like you I don't think I'd take her to Claires either.

I took my daughter when she was 4 months old to the piercing pagoda at the mall. I was tired of people calling her a little boy even though she wore dresses and pink... I watched the women that work there hand sanitize and how they worked with other babies before I took her in. They did a great job and she cried only when the second one got done for about 2 mintues. She left them alone and that was that. I have heard awesome things about the Mearle Norman in the Lake Miriam Plaza.....on the southside of Lakeland. You have to wait to pierce them until they've at least had their first set of shots.

Hope that helps...

I have two little girls and I got both of their ears peirced when they were 3 mos old. I had them done at the Piercing pagoda in the mall, but my friend had her little girls ears done at her pediatricians office. My girls were upset at first, but they were easily distracted from that. I am glad I had it done because they have always been interested in my earings and love to get new earings for themselves. I am glad that I made the choice that I did.

Cleaning them was very easy and because they were so young the never messed with them; so they never got infected. I had their ears pierced using gold studs though because I have to use gold or my ears get infected.

I had my daughters ears pierced when she was a baby at the piercing pagoda in the mall. I checked with her Doctor and they said as long as she has had her first round of shots that it is completely safe and in some ways better than when they are older as they do not touch them and pull at them. She cried briefly due more to the sound then the pain and she was fine after that. I say go for it. Most girls love having their ears pierced and if later on she doesn't like it then she doesn't have to wear any ear rings.
