There is an iodine solution you can get from Walgreens and the like. If you dilute it with warm to hot water it pulls the infection out. My husband didn't believe me until he tried it last week for an infected hang nail.
So my child tends to rip your nails and then puffy skin starts to form on the other part of the nail bed. Gross gross. Do your kids do this ? I know to soak the feet in salty warm water, but any other tips ? I wish they would just stop picking.

I did this when i was young and my toe got super infected. I had to get numbing shots into my toe. OW! Then they removed my whole toenail. I wore red socks, so make sure she doesnt wear colored socks, the dye will infect it more.
Also my daughter does this a lot and her toe got infected. I took her to her dr and he said dont worry about it. Well then a red line started creeping up from her toe up her foot. Then she touched it and spread it to her finger then her ear. It was crazy! She had to be put on antibiotics.
We had to keep everything wrapped up so it didnt spread more and she had to let her ears close up.
Please watch out for Staph infections. IF there is a sore on your child's toe etc.
It can enter, into even small cuts.
I had that happen to me as a child, and I got VERY seriously ill, systemically, almost ending up in the hospital.
It even happened to my Daughter's Teacher last year.
Take your child to the Doctor.
Right now, I have a little wound on my elbow. It got swollen and sore and red. I went to the Doc today. It was a Staph infection... still not spreading widely... but a little. But I was given 2 kinds of Antibiotics. To be taken for 1 week.
And yes, if a red line or swollen redness starts to creep up their leg or starts to enlarge... it means the infection is spreading... and this is NOT good.
You can get real, sick... per an infection that is developing that way.
A Staph infection in even a small cut... can also develop into fever, general body illness, and worse. As well as infection at the site of the wound.
At bathtime make sure they scrub with a nail brush it will help get bacteria out. Also teach them to trim with a nail clipper instead and use a file for sharp/rough edges. If it's a girl, painted nails always discouraged me from ripping them off. I'm always after my son about biting his fingernails and ripping his toe nails too, we just have to keep after them!
A bandaid over Neosporin or a generic equivalent. I used to have infected toenails all the time from picking and biting them when I was young. That always did the trick.
