i love the apple pie suggestion or something along those lines that can be eaten with ice cream? or maybe some cool new toppings? crushed nuts, bananas? they may not drink so I'd avoid alcohol.
We just moved to a new house and a new town. One of our neighbors came by to say hello last night (an older gentleman who lives with his wife and they are both retired). He invited us over to have ice cream tomorrow night with our 2 children. My question is should we bring anything? Usually when someone invites me into their home I bring some sort of hostess gift (unless we are good friends or family), but for ice cream I'm not sure what to do. Suggestions?
Thanks for all of the suggestions. I wanted to make something to go with the ice cream but didn't have time to run to the store, so I made some sweet cherry chocolate chip blondies with local cherries that we had in our fridge. They were pretty yummy and went well with the ice cream.

homemade cookies or brownies without nuts
also be sure to take an index card with your name and # on it. We have tons of neighbors and chat with them when we are outside, but I couldn't tell you the spouses name or phone # for most of them.
An apple pie or some other pie to go with the ice cream
I would bring over some nice coffee or a tin of fine tea. If they have invited you and your children over for ice cream, a nice cup of coffee or tea would be great!
I really like the apple pie idea too! If you make it yourself, include a card with the recipe. Don't forget a thank you note!
I would ask what I could bring. If they say "Nothing" or "Don't worry about it" I would find out what flavor of ice cream they are going to make and try and bring something that would go with it.
I make Boysenberry Ice Cream and my wife uses a recipe that has been in her family for about 4 generations. I grow the boysenberries in my garden. The only thing that goes with that that you could bring would be a spoon. Friends usually bring a batch of home made brownies or chocolate chip cookies on another date. And that kind of thing is always welcome.
Good luck to you and yours.
can't go wrong with flowers.

If you knew them, you could bring a bottle of wine but since you don't maybe a small thing of flowers or a plant.
Something that goes well with ice cream.
Flowers.
Drinks,
I would bring a small cake (like 6incher) or 6 cupcakes or small plate of lemon bars.
I agree with a coffee gift pack or some type of food gift pack. Or perhaps bake some cookies and wrap them up in pretty shrink wrap.
The other option is to bring a gift pack of chocolates.
I'd go pick up a smaller cake at Walmart or somewhere and take that along. It will go well with the ice cream and make it more festive. You might just call the wife and visit with her too.
