My daughter has had pain in her right side, bellow her belly button and back, and has also been vomitting. The doctors want so say, since they can't find anything else that she may have irritable bowel syndrome. Has anyone every experienced extreme pain and vomitting everyday for a month with irritable bowel syndrome. She was diagnosed with gastroparesis. She also has chron's disease. She had a resection of her bowel in January which was on the right side. I was concerened that the irritable bowel disease was not the correct diagnosis, but I thought I would ask if anyone has ever had these symptoms with irritable bowel disease. I have IBD and I only have pain for maybe a day.

So What Happened?

Thank you for all your responses. My daughter actually has rumination syndrome. We had to come back to the children's hospital in Columbus on Tuesday. We saw the top doctor of the GI Departement. This is what he diagnosed her with. Her symptoms do match better. She vomits without gagging, her lips are always chapped, she has pain in her right side. It is like a cow regurgitating and rechewing its food. My daughter mostly vomits everything back up, but she has mentioned that she swallows it down sometimes. It is like a tick the doctor said. He did have good news, it shouldn't last forever. It should go away. She will have to go to counselling. It is also caused by anxiety and depression. I think with all our moves and her sister going back to live with their biological parents didn't help at all. I think it brought all of this on. It was just to much for her. We are moving into a new house next month. It will be our 3rd move in less than a year. However, this should be a good move. She won't have to share a room with her sister and nephew. She will have her own space to go to when distressed. I hope that this information will help someone else someday. Thanks again for keeping her in your prayers. K.

Dear K.,
I have both IBS and Gastroparesis and though I've been down for more than a day with pain from my IBS, my vomiting has never lasted more than one day. I would see a specialist...and if you have already, please get a second opinon.

Has your daughter ever been checked for endometriosis? I have that, but it only bothers me during my time of the month, but some people it bothers all the time - depending on where it is and how bad they have it. I don't know if you know what it is, but it can cause cysts and organs can become attached to each other, and I have a friend who even had it IN her colon. It might be worth checking out. If the docs aren't looking for it, they may miss it. I was also wondering if her appendix has been checked. Good luck and I hope they figure it out for her.

Have you ruled out celiac diease? Celiac disease is often mis-diagnosed as IBS. Celiacs has an intolerance to gluten (which is in many products). It can be done first with a blood test. It might be worth checking into.

I also strrugle with IBS. I had my gallbladder removed in 97 when I was only 22 yrs old. The Dr said that my gallbladder was not functioning properly and had been bad for 5-6 yrs before they removed it which would have made me 16-17 when I started having problems. The vomiting and pain in her stomach and back sounds like gallbaldder attacks. I am no Dr so don't take this to heart. Just may be something worth looking into. Also since she was diagnosed with Chron's it could be a possible link. Good luck and I hope she starts to feel better soon.

Have they checked her gallbladder? Those symptoms and the location would indicate gallbladder issues to me. I have IBS and I've never vomited with it. I get really bad stomach cramps, constipation or diarrhea, sometimes the shakes and cold-sweats, some nausea. But I've read that it CAN cause vomiting. I hope you can find some answers for her, soon!

Hi K., I just wanted to mention that Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Irritable Bowel Disease are two completely different afflictions. Just wanted to say this in case your Doc isn't being clear on what exactly he thinks your daughter has.

I'm really suspicious of the IBS diagnosis, esp. considering your daughters surgery and all. Like the previous poster said it is one of those things some Doc's like to throw out there just because they have given up and have no clue what it is.

I'd get a 2nd opinion. GL to you and I sure hope your daughter improves ASAP!

I've had IBS for 7 years and never vomited from it. When I do have pain, it's usually in the lower LEFT abdomen or gas pains in the upper LEFT abdomen since those are places where the large intestine bends. I would strongly recommend a second opinion since it's the same location as the surgery. Like someone else suggested, scar tissue could be causing the problem.

I have IBS and I have not thrown up but man do I get nauseous and feel that I am gonna. My pain is up the sides of my tummy and I get cramps. I take meds at least once a day and that helps a lot I can definetly tell by what I eat. If I eat a bland diet than I feel so much better. Just sometimes I just crave something spicey and I know that I will pay!!! But if you are not happy with what your Dr says I would definetly get a second opinion if you feel that something is not right than go with your gut! Best of luck.

I'm told that appendicitis can cause the symptoms you described. I was also told that one way to check was to apply some pressure to the area, let out quickly. If it hurts more when you let out, it is the appendix. If not, then keep looking. I hope this helps. My heart goes out to your daughter! What a way for a child to have to live! Poor thing. My thoughts and prayers are with you both. Shannon G.

I was diagnosed in high school with IBS after I spent what seemed like months having diarrhea in the morning and barely eating each day. We took a lot of tests that came up with nothing, so finally my doctor put me on different meds, but each one made me feel worse. They were muscle relaxants I think, and they lowered my blood pressure too much. We decided to change my diet for a while, and I think that helped. I didn't drink milk for a long time (I drink chocolate milk and milk in my tea and on my cereal, now), and I tried to stay away from spicy foods and increased the amount of fiber I ate each day. I think I still had the symptoms when I was in college, but after I got married and moved out on my own, it seemed as though my symptoms went away. I think the big difference was just eating healthier and exercising. Occasionally, I have bouts, but I really don't think about it anymore. I think my IBS was stress induced and I think I had depression at the time of my diagnosis, so when I'm really anxious now, I try to make sure I watch my diet a lot, exercise more, and try to sleep well. I've always had problems with my digestive system, ever since I was a baby, but most of the time I've dealt with constipation. The diarrhea was the biggest problem in high school. I don't think I ever had the vomiting, but I do remember the crampy pains and nausea. Since your daughter has Chron's disease and had the bowel resection, you might want to get a second opinion about the IBS diagnosis (if you haven't already). Good luck!

You can try a daily probiotic - Culturelle seems to be the most popular. You can order it on Vitacost or Drugstore.com, the Sams's Clubs that have pharmacy's usually carry it too, but call before you because sometimes it won't be in until the next day.

K.,
Has your daughter ever had her gallbladder checked? The reason I wonder is my sister just had hers removed and her symptoms sound pretty similar to your daughters. She had a lot of pain in her abdomen and lower back. Her doctor first diagnosed her with irritable bowl syndrome, but my sister still had the symptoms even after treatment. They actually got worse to the point she was vomiting and having constant diarrhea. She finally went back to her doctor and told her to check her gallbladder (after researching it herself). Her doctor did and determined it was severely infected and needed to be removed. It was and she feels like a new person today. If she hasn't already, I would urge her to get her gallbladder checked. Good luck, I hope she gets some relief soon.

I have IBS, but with no vomiting.
IBS is too VERY common & seems to be tossed around as a diagnosis as easily as ADHD is in children. TOOOOO much!!!!
I'd definately seek out a second opinion.
Your daughter needs to be happy & not in pain.
I hope you find your answers SOON!!

I was diagnosed with IBS in 1998 after being admitted to the hospital due to severe abdominal pain and vomiting. I experienced these symptoms for several days, which led to dehydration. IBS can be managed by diet. Your daughter should learn what she can and cannot eat as well as increase her dietary fiber intake. Every persons needs are different, it helps to be aware of the 'signs' from your body. Being a busy mom certainly makes this more challenging but not less important.

I don't know about that. I've had IBS and not ever did I vomit. Just the pains and I did feel nautious, but never vomitted. But I'm not a child either. If I was you I would get a second opinion, especially if you have doubts. Have they checked her appendix? My nephew had appendicitis really bad and some of the symptoms sound like what he experienced, if not that it also sounds like gallstones or an attack! I will keep you and your daughter in my prayers.

I am an IBS sufferer and i have never had vomiting from it. Also if it is IBS it is easily dealt with by portion control and a controled diet once you figure out what her trigger foods are. There is a great author by the name of Heather VanVorous she has a website plus books dealing with IBS. I found it very useful when i was diagnosed with IBS. Good luck to you and lets hope that whatever it is is curable!

K.,

I would be concerned about the area in which they did the resection. If that is the same side she had done, as her pain now, I would wonder about scar tissue causing a blockage. Please don't be affraid to get a second opinion, if your doc's can't confrim a diagnosis. Good luck to you!

Hi K.-
I have IBS. I was diagnosed about 5 years ago. My pain was in my stomach area and I never vomited but had diarrhea after I ate. It was only after eating certain foods I would get this way. I feel so bad that your daughter to have these conditions. It sounds like maybe something to do with her Crohn's but not too sure. I would get another opinion. IBS just doesn't sound right. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
