IRS Earned Income Credit... Do You Qualify?

Here is what the IRS website says. You have to WORK to claim it, not just be poor. I hope this helps all you out. My question, so it won't be pulled, is do you qualify. I am not really looking for answers.

EITC is also called EIC or Earned Income Credit.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Who can claim the credit and and if I qualify, how do I get it?

To claim EITC on your tax return, you must meet all the following rules:
•You, your spouse (if you file a joint return), and all other listed on Schedule EIC, must have a valid Social Security Number.
•You must have earned income from working for someone else or running or operating a farm or business;
•Your filing status cannot be married filing separately.
•You must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien all year, or a nonresident alien married to a U.S. citizen or resident alien and filing a joint return.
•You cannot be a qualifying child of another person.
•You cannot file Form 2555 or Form 2555 EZ. (Related to foreign earn income)
•You must meet these EITC Income Limits, Maximum Credit Amounts and Tax Law Updates
•And you must meet one of the following: •Have a qualifying child (see who is a qualifying child below), or
•If you do not have a qualifying child, you must: •be age 25 but under 65 at the end of the year,
•live in the United States for more than half the year, and
•not qualify as a dependent of another person.

If you qualify for EITC, you have to file a tax return with the IRS, even if you owe no tax or are not required to file.

KayB, I don't understand what you're asking. What you wrote tells you whether or not you qualify and that you need to file a tax return. I'm guessing you've not filed before. Just get a form and start filling it out. There is a web site that allows you to file on-line for free. You'll find a connection on the IRS site.

Go thru the list and answer yes or no to each question. You must have all the qualifications it states.
1) Do you and your children and spouse have a SS number?

2) you or your husband must be working and have income

3) If you're married you must file jointly

4) You must be a US citizen or the others mentioned

5) you cannot be a child on anyone else's return

5) have no foreign income

6) meet EITC income limits, maximum credit amounts and tax law updates. You'll find this on the IRS site or on the return and it's directions. Google this phrase or enter it in a search box on the IRS site.

7) have a qualifying child or be 25-65 at end of year 2012. again you can find out whether or not you have a qualifying child by looking at the IRS site or the instructions for the return.

8) live in US for more than 6 mos.

9) not qualify as a dependent of another person. this relates to # 5

I went back to reread your post. I really do not understand why you've posted this. And I may have just wasted my time trying to respond.

well this is kind of a dumb question / dumb answer kind of thing. Yes I get it because hello I earned it. I work and I pay in taxes. If the government had not been giving out so many benefits to people who didn't work for them we would not be in the financial mess we are in now.

A for instance for this in case anyone wants to get their panties in a wad is the social security mess. So many people who never worked and or didn't work enough to get a social security check got one based on their spouses check. Why would someone who never worked get a check based on the fact that their spouse did? It makes no sense and its why my husband who has worked hard for 30 years and has another 15 to go will probably not get to collect social security.

I am glad it is finally going to get fixed. not everyone will be happy but maybe it will get worked out eventually.
