Is Crud a Bad Word

I think it's helpful that you mentioned you came from another country.
It's true that words mean different things in different places.
If crud doesn't bother you or DH, then it's fine, imo.
If it does bother you, then it's not so fine.
You might want to come up w/a few alternative "bad" words
for DS to use when he's out among other people . . . .
just in case.
For example . . . . CHARD! or RUTABAGA!
A person can use just about any word as an expletive,
to blow off steam, but his choice of words can be meaningless
to the people around him.

Not at all. My youngest sone says :"jiminey the cricket" when he gets mad. This after I heard him say "sh!t" after he dropped a toy. Nice. So we say the former now :). it's really funny to see people's reactions when he gets frustrated and hollars out Jiminey the Cricket!

Yes, it is a "bad" word. The use of slang, even if not a traditional "curse" word is disrespectful and should be discouraged among children and adults.

Crud is like: Shoot, doh, darn, ect. It's not bad at all.

With that said, to each his/her own and you'll just have to decide where you stand on your family's use of it. In our home we have always just taught that "crud", "freaking", "shoot", and similar replacement words for cursing were not allowed and considered disrespectful. Still doesn't make it a bad word. Just one we've decided not to use.

Oh Crud! I used to say that all the time. I don't think it's a bad word. There are much worse alternatives.

"Crud" isn't too bad, as bad words go. Sometimes a person with a dirty car wants to get the "crud" (the mess, the dirt, or the grime) off it. Once in a while, you may hear a virus that's going around a neighborhood referred to as "the creeping crud."

Yes, "butt" is not a polite word (which is why it is said so often on television), and it can certainly be found offensive. That's not the best choice for him. My favorite bad word of all time is "rats." It is not profane, it is not obscene, and the rats don't get offended - as far as I know. But that might be too tame.

It takes a while to understand the ins and outs of slang words, so just tell your son that you're learning along with him. However, one of your responders is right in saying that talking slang or semi-cussing is not a good way to communicate at all. If your son is going to test the bad words, he needs to test twice as many good ones.

In reality I would rather hear SH** come out of my kid's mouth than Stupid!! Stupid is a very bad word as you are telling someone else that what they are doing is unintelligent or inferior.
In our house we say puddles for an alternative.

Here's a cute one from my cousin:
Her friend has a daughter and when she was little the mom was very much into Nordstrum's, Macy's, Field's, you get the picture. M. was/is high maintenance. She would never be caught dead in a Kmart. So one day her 4 year old daughter was very upset and in her loudest voice yells KMART!!! It was the worst thing she could think of.

if that is the only "cuss" word he wants to use he is ok. crud is said instead of s**t. not a bad word by my books.

No I don't think crud is a dirty word. Don't think butt is a bad one either. Using it in a sentence to describe kissing it is though ")
Not that we "cuss" in our home but I do question that any of the cuss words are really bad. Just a thought: Who made them bad? I only know of one and that's the GD one. All the others are just made up ones. It's always bugged me since becoming a Christian, but that's another post ;)

I tell my kids if they can't say the word at school then they can't say the word at home. I don't think crud is a bad word.

shoot, shucks, ahww, man, really!, come on, wow, fiddle sticks, you've got to be kidding, give me a break, Noooooooo, nuts, gee wiz, Jeez, wow, feh, oy, uhggg, fudgcycle, aww sugar, fooey, holy cow, jiminey cricket, good grief, rats, etc.

There are lots of options to express aggravation that are not offensive. Let him try some on.

Well obviously your son uses it as a word for bottom, other wise he's talking about kissing his cigarette end. And I hope that's not the case.
Anyway crud, I don't think is a bad word but some people have a different view of these words.
What about shoot?

no crud is not a bad word..if someone said "oh crud" to me ..it just means..oh man!.. butt is not a bad word..but kiss my butt..well...that's not nice to say to someone but isn't really that big of a deal..sometimes its not the word its how its used and how its directed at someone

He is either being a parrot (if a toddler), or choosing this word to say (if older).

Try having him come up with a list of words you can write down. Start with the actual curse word and ask him to come up with an alternative. You can always help him if he gets stuck. They can be serious words, funny words or even made up words. For example, sugar or shoot instead of s--t. This way he can own the words and be more likely to use them. The list can be posted up and your whole family can use the alternative words to model and help your son remember.
