Is He Pooping Often Enough?

My little guy turned 4 months old right before Christmas. For about a month now, he has only been pooping every week and a half or so. He is exclusively breast fed. When he does poop, there is SO MUCH of it, and is extremely smooth and custardy. I know this is TMI, but you moms understand, I'm sure. I have his four month check up in a couple of weeks, so I will be sure to ask about this, but have any of you Mama experts dealt with this? My older son pooped every single day. My little guy has always suffered from gas and general digestive discomfort. His belly doesn't feel hard and his gassiness/discomfort has been improving. Any suggestions/ideas/comments? Thanks Mamas!!

Perfectly normal! My Isaac would always wait until we were running late AND he had on a GOOD outfit, then he'd have a MASSIVE blow out! As long as it's soft when he does go he's fine!

I had the same thing with my last two boys of 5 kids. Everything is fine as the doctor will tell you, Babe is using everything in the milk so chances are he is putting on the weight and looking quite healthy. Enjoy the time goes so fast ;)

TOTALLY normal for a breastfed baby. Enjoy while it lasts. It was a regular topic of dicussion in my parent-baby group led by nurse/trained infant development folks.

My baby also doesn't poop very often. The Dr says he needs to go every 4 days and if he doesn't on the 4th then he needs an enema. The Dr also said to give him 1oz of juice 2 times a day. My baby is on formula due to a problem I had with my breast during breast feeding. Hope this helps.

Totally normal. Especially if when he does go it is soft. Do not worry at all. You can not take the advice of moms who are formula feeding either. TOTALLY different digestion. If you hear of pediatricians saying that it is not normal and the baby must go on this day (if not showing any sighns of constipation) then you have a pediatrician that is locked into the 80's early 90's when formula feeding was the norm. Enjoy your baby, let go the poop patrol. LOL He his fine! I do have a little exspertise in this department... Enjoy him as the days past oh so quickly.

My youngest was exactly that way. He was exclusively breast fed, and was super gassy. I always wondered how a breastfed baby could possibly smell so awful. And when he pooped? Whew! Over Christmas, he went almost two full weeks without pooping! It was awful--he'd get so cranky and miserable, but would NOT poop--and we tried a lot of things! My doctor, at his next well-child visit, actually suggested a little rice cereal. I was concerned for a number of reasons (introducing it too soon, iron content) but she suggested that the iron would actually firm up his stool and make it easier to pass. After a couple more weeks of misery, we went with the cereal, and the doc was right: it worked like a charm. I would say he's fine, but if it's bothering you, and you're ok starting cereal before 6 months, that might be a solution if it's a concern. If it's not, I'd say he's probably fine! They do say breastfed babies don't get constipated.

If the poop is smooth and custardy, that is normal- he is not constipated. Regarding his gassiness and digestive discomfort. If he is exclusively breastfed, without formula to disrupt his digestive system, you may want to take a look at what you're eating. Many foods that mom eats can make babies extra gassy or fussy, including dairy and some leafy vegetables like cabbage and broccoli.

It is totally normally especially if exclusively breastfed. My son would poop every Wednesday at about 1100--he was that regular. (I would try to drop him off with someone so I wouldn't have to do clean up -hehe :) It was always massive in amount but soft. My doctor said not to worry as long as my son didn't seem bothered by it, which he didn't. Once he started eating solids at 6 months he started going daily, so you're days are coming of daily diapers again!! Keep up the great job of providing your son with the best--breastmilk!!

Pooping once every 7-10 days is within the range of "normal" for an exclusively breastfed baby a few months old. My first son when through a phase like that. When we started him on solids around 7 months he started pooping more often. If his stools are not hard and painful for him to pass, he is not constipated.

Just wanted to let you know that my two boys were EXACTLY like yours. Both exclusively breastfed. The oldest pooped ALL the time until he started eating solids. The youngest had a lot of gas and stomach pain the first weeks (I also had too much milk). He never pooped nearly as frequently as my oldest (usually every 2-3 days) and then he started going really long in between poops around 4 months (10 days I think was the longest - I have photos of the diaper change that followed...). Totally normal, as far as I understand, and he never seemed bothered by it (also had impressively smelly gas for a baby). Now he's 8 months and poops several times a day (started going more regularly when I introduced solids).

My daughter is almost 6 months old. In the last month she started pooping every day or every other day. But she used be every 3 or 4 days or more. I addressed this to my doctor. She wasn't concerned at all, as long as she was still having plenty of wet diapers and she wasn't pooping pellets. She said my baby was just very efficient at processing breastmilk. Just like your son, when she pooped, it was a lot! And since he is having a good consistency of poop when he does poop, that shows that he is okay. It always concerned me that she didn't poop very often, but it seems to be normal amongst some babies.

That is not normal... every day or two is perfectly normal but not over a week. Please seek your physican attention immediately. This could be a very serious condition.

Don't be alarmed by your first response. It sounds like your baby is just fine. I am going to paste a link from the La Leche League website. Here is what it says about a breastfed baby's bowel movements after 6 weeks of age.

http://www.llli.org/FAQ/bm.html

After Six Weeks

It is normal for the bowel movements of a breastfed to decrease in frequency when the colostrum, which has laxative properties, is completely gone from the mother's milk after about six weeks of age. A baby this age may continue to have bowel movements as frequently as five times a day, sometimes even after every nursing. It is also normal for a breastfed baby older than six weeks to have only one bowel movement every few days. Some healthy babies will have only one bowel movement a week. When bowel movements are less frequent, they should be more profuse in volume. As long as the baby is gaining well, wetting sufficiently, and is happy and content there is no cause to be alarmed by infrequent bowel movements, and it is not necessary to give the baby a laxative, fruit juice, or any other "helpers." In fact, attempting to force bowel movements can have harmful consequences to your baby.

After the baby is about six weeks old, he may wet only five to six cloth diapers per day, but if so these diapers will be much wetter. As the baby's bladder grows, he can produce and hold more urine at a time. To judge wetness of a diaper for an older baby, pour 8 tablespoons (120 ml) onto a dry diaper. That would be considered a normally wet diaper.

My friends daughter has the same kind of (in)frequency and is breastfed, and one thing she tried that got her to poop successfully was a lubricated qtip inserted in the rectum while holding legs up and pressing against stomach; worked like a charm she said.

No he is not. You should definitely discuss this with your pediatrician. My son was only going every 3 days, I thought it was fine but his pediatrician told me otherwise. I had to put an oz of water more in his bottle w/o more formula to make him use the restroom. Now he is on lactosefree formula bc the regular kind made him gassy.

Definitely seek medical advice.
