Hello Everyone,

I am wondering if its ok to get two puppies from the same litter?I am wondering if anyone has acutally done this themselves.
I am reading online where it says that there is a such thing as " Litter Mate Syndrome " but I am not sure if this applies to all dogs or just some breeds? We are considering Two Bassett hounds. We are thinking male and female combo or two females.
If we get male and female combo we will get them both fixed for sure.

I am thinking with the correct training and spending time with the puppies since I am a stay at home mom right now that it will be fine. Just wanting others oppinions and stories for this matter.

Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for the great advice....

We ended up picking two basset hounds.

We got a Female ( SHES THE ALPHA OF THE LITTLER )
We also got a male ( Very laid back and likes to sleep alot )

The female is such a hoot and was totally hamming it up so we just had to get her. She is also the pic of the litter.
The male is very sweet and crawled in my lap and went to sleep.

Thank you so much everyone!

I had 2 littermates that were both boys. They were german shep mix breeds. They loved each other so much. RIP, Jordan & Duke, best dogs ever. Never had any aggression problems or anything. They were both neutered.

We bought 2 chaweenies 2 Easters ago (sisters) Izzy and Bella. They are inseperateable!!! They sleep in the same kennel and eat from the same dishes and if one is out of ones site they looking for the other. The only thing that scares me is if, God forbid something happens to one what will happen to the other. So yes, I would do it OVER AGAIN if I ever need to.
We also have a 5yrs Pug (Male) Mugsy he is like a big bro to them and they pick on him something fierce!! But he loves the attention. Plus they keep him active.
PAW POWERS ACTIVATE!!!! As our girls would say.

Fix them, even if they are two males or two females. Dogs are very territorial, and though they won't be able to mate, the hormones of two mature males or two mature females can definitely lead to territorial disputes and dominance issues. However, if you fix them both and study up on training, you should be fine.

Plenty of people have dogs from the same litter and most of the time it works out well although occasionally you get a sibling pair that fights frequently to the point where the owners have to rehome one of the dogs. I'm not sure that this happens with any more frequency than with non-sibling dogs sharing the same home. Either way - get your dogs spayed/neutered no matter if you get two males, two females or one of each.

I had Westie littermates, male and female. The male was dominant and there were never any problems. They were the best of friends and would sleep using each other as pillows - so cute. You have to fix one a little too early, but you can wait on the second one. I fixed the female at 6 months, but the male a few months later since he was a late bloomer (the surgery is safer after testicles fully descend). The only downside is that they are the same age and will depart around the same time. After the first died, we got a new puppy to help the family cope with the passing of the second and that turned out to be a good idea. Enjoy!

If you get two males they should be fixed ASAP. Two females would probably get along better. your best best would be to talk to the breeder. If they are reputable, they should have knowledge and advice. Every breed tends to have some distinct personality traits. So speaking with the breeder should give you the most insight!

Its totally fine! They usually are already bonded. As long as they are fixed there shouldnt be any problems.

We got two female lab/pit mixes from the same litter and it works out most of the time, but one is way more dominant than the other and has been since we brought them home at six weeks. They are both very, very people friendly...but once in a while...wow...the less dominant one will have had enough...or the more dominant female will think her sister has not defered to her enough...and they are ON! They have had about four serious fights with one another in the last 4 years. It was after the first fight when I went online to get help...that I read you should never get littermates. Since then, I've read different things pro/con. For the most part, our girls coexist just fine. But I'm not sure I'd ever do that again.
