Is Smelly Odor While Using Progesterone Gel Normal

Hello,

I am currently vaginally inserting Crinone 8% nightly after I received a positive pregnancy result. My doctor felt this would aid me in carrying the baby to full-term after I miscarried earlier this year. This part if it helps is great, but I noticed a foul fishy like odor today. Is this normal? Does it mean the gel is bad? Should I stop using it? Help! Thanks for all positive replies.

What can I do next?

Fishy odor is suggestive of bacterial vaginosis, a condition of overgrowth of bacteria in the vagina due to change in vaginal Ph. You should make an appt with your Dr next week if the oder continues or other irritation develops. Please keep using the gel. If you stop using the gel, it could cause a drop in the level of progesterone and increase your risk of miscarriage and bleeding. Nurse Midwife Mom

Here is the drug listing: http://www.drugs.com/sfx/crinone-side-effects.html
I would call the Dr., Monday morning.
Do you have a 24 hr. line through a insurance company? You could call them.
I would probably keep using it. I am no expert in the field but it seems that maybe it is just disturbing your body's PH balance.
HTH! So glad you went to the Dr.! :)

I never had a smell, but it would build up in there and come out in clumps...TMI...I know! But is was worrying me I was having the discharge with the huge clumps of "stuff" and the dr's office told me it was just the filler in the progesterone that built up and then came back out.

However, if it smells maybe there is a chance of infection. Call your doctors office first thing in the morning. Or if you are in pain or have a fever call the doctor on call.

I do the suppositories from a compounding pharmacy and some mornings it's HORRIBLE. The doc checked it out and it's just the carrier (the stuff that holds the progesterone).. don't stop using it, your kid obviously needs it and just know it'll smell a little funky sometimes.

You do want to have it checked. I used that when it was brand new, kind of a trial thing instead of the other alternative of painful shots. It does build up as others have mentioned. But I also got an infection from it and had to take some meds to clear it up. I only used it for the first 10 weeks to make sure my hormone levels stayed high enough to make sure my babies stayed put.

I used those after fertility treatment before and did not have that side effect. However, it does have a strange foamy texture and started to accumulate up pretty high, so maybe it's due to that...?
