My 6 year old was asking about the Nintendo 3DS. Is it okay for smaller kids? I'm not too familiar with it so any advice would be helpful!

What can I do next?

My kids were in first grade when they got their DS games.
We just limited amount of time on it as we still do with electronics.

That's a fine age for a DS. My only advise is to make sure you buy a case of some kind to put the games in. The games are very small cartidges (about 1" x 1.5"), and it's important that you get your child into the habit of always putting the games away after they're done playing.

Our kids had them when they were 4 and 6. It's the games YOU put in them that make them age appropriate or not age appropriate.

We get games for ours at Game Stop. We get them on clearance and for low prices because we just won't pay a lot for them. We also got one of our DS's there and it was maybe $50.

Yes. My daughter got hers around that age. We just didn't buy any of the 3D games until she was older because we were worried that at too young an age, it might affect her vision. Make sure you buy a thick, padded foam case for the console. My daughter would drop hers accidentally or she'd let a kid play with it at school, and it would accidentally slip out of their hands. The case saved us many a times from having a broken console.

Nerf makes a good Triple Armor case. I actually was unaware of the cases and learned the hard way one time when my daughter dropped her 3DS and it broke. Luckily, it was still under warranty and I shipped it to Nintendo via FedEx and it was repaired and sent back to me (scratched case and all). I got her a thick foam case, and that prevented further pricey mishaps from that point forward, as I mentioned.

My daughter at 10 still plays with hers, despite having an XBox, laptop, tablet, and a cellphone loaded with games, in addition to my cellphone, which she occasionally uses for playing games or watching YouTube videos. For example, she seemed interested in the new Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS game that just came out. That might be a good game for your kid if you end up buying the 3DS. According to commonsensemedia.com, a website I rely on for movies and more, it is good for kids 7+. It is ideal for smaller kids. By the time he is 10 or so he will want to move on to an ipod touch or a tablet, but the ds is good for little kids.
