Is This Normal? Could It Be Part of the Mucus Plug?

Hi I'm 35 wks pregnant today and when I went to my ob last week I was having some cramping and a lot of bh contractions so they decided to check me and he said that I am 20% effaced but am not dialated at all. His head is also down in my pelvis. Last night after we picked my daughter up from my mom's and got home from lamaze class I had to pee really bad (of course) so while my daughter was getting on her night clothes I ran into the bathroom. Well after I was finished I noticed these little tiny white balls of discharge. Does anyone know if this is normal? Could it be little tiny pieces of the mucus plug? With my daughter I lost it in one big clump. I've been having a lot of irregular contractions the last week or so and some are more painful then others but they are by no means regular. I'm so glad that they decided to move me up to every week already.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank You everyone so much for your responses I really appreciate them. I went to the ob today and they did another pelvic exam. I am now still around 20% effaced but am now 1 cm dialated. In her opinion due to the other symptoms that I am having I should make it through Christmas but she's not to sure how far into the New Year I will make it.

When this happened to be, I freaked out and told my doctor I needed to see him immediately. It was 2 weeks later that I actually had my daughter. Completely normal!

That is completely normal. It might not be your plug, it might just be thick mucus too. Near the end of all of my pregnancies I would get a lot of thick discharge that was just mucus.

Hi H.,

It sounds like it could be your mucous plug, but I would recommend calling your OB just to be sure. My mucous plug came out in little clumps over time, but it wasn't white balls, it was strings of mucous.

congrats on your baby-to-be!

HI H. -

I am an OB Nurse and I can assure you that white balls of mucus is normal at the end of pregnancy. It may be part of your mucus plug, but it doesn't matter if it is. You could lose that and not deliver for a few weeks yet. The irregular BH contractions are normal also. Hang in there for a few more weeks - you know it will be worth it!!

No worries! Most Mucus plugs come out in pieces. Mine always did, and I have 4 kiddies! Braxton Hicks can be painful, and is just your body preparing. THe more your body prepares, the closer you get. You are far enough along that the baby is safe, so just sit back and wait, and get that room ready! :) Plus keep in mind you are a lot older than you were with your first one, body's change. And that has an affect on how we handle pregnancy. So far your sounds perfectly normal! But I'm sure you are super anxious! I wish you the best!

Hi mommy! yes this is normal. I also was loosing mucus plug chunks at a time with my 4th child, (who decided to make me uncomfortable at the thanks-giving table. So i just ran back & forth to the bathroom that whole evening flushing my mucus plug, since i had no fluid loss. I did call my midwife c.n. of course she was happy since my son decided he didnt want to leave ze'womb(tryn 2 make a funny), she knew I really really wasnt in no rush to go through this, especially when she told me how much he was weighing in ze'womb. She timed everything right even down to (erging me to be induced since my baby boy was allready 7 days over due/late. She did kinda have to force my hand, because she wasnt letting me go no more than 14 days past due. wouldnt you know it! baby-boy held on till 14 days past hid arrival date, so I agreed to have my labor induced. My midwife/nurse called the procedure from the beginning to the end, everything was timed perfectly,& she kept giving me a shot of somthing to kep the pain away untill we finally hit 10 centimeters! (god! i didnt like what was comming next! you know it doesnt matter how many kids i have, i allways seem to try to hold out on going through labor as if i really could! Laugh) You & your baby-boy will be just fine! congratulations to you & your husband, & Merry-X-Mas, S. mother of 5

Its completly normal, it's the mucus plug is coming out. It's not a big deal and doesn't mean you are going into labor. This happend to me like crazy every time I walked around when I had my 3rd baby. It drove me nutts I had to keep changing my underwear.

The mucous plug would be clear, perhaps tinged pink or brown...not white. I'd be concerned that you are showing signs of a yeast infection. You should discuss this with your care provider.

The mucus plug can come out way ahead of time. Also could be some yeast dislodged by the pelvic exam. 20% effaced is nothing to worry about as far as pre-term labor. Remember to call you provider if bleeding, your water breaks or leaks, or you have regular real contractions.
