ISO - Acoustic Guitar for 10Yr Old Daughters

My 10 yr old daughters middle school is offering free guitar lessons in the mornings and she would love to attend. The problem is she has no guitar and the school doesn't provide them (nor did I expect them to). My first question is what size should we get her? I understand there is a 3/4 and a 4/4 size.

My daughter is so excited about this she wants to use her birthday money to buy one. I've started to look around and found they are at least $100. I would hate for her to spend so much money and find out it isn't her thing. That leads me to my next question...does anyone have a guitar laying around that we can borrow or buy from real cheap?

TIA

What can I do next?

Check freebiecycle.com or craigslist.

The first thing you need to do is consult with a quality guitar shop and educate yourself. They can recommend the correct size plus may have leads on some for sale, possible consignment, etc.

Don't just buy what you find because it appears to be a deal.. EDUCATE yourself first.

THEN, go to guitar and music shops... Plano - WIlliamson Music, Allen - Dallas Strings *we bought our daughter's violin at Dallas Strings and it is a good place to get info. Not positive if they have guitars.) There are several music stores in the area, some of which rent instruments to students.

Once you know if she likes it or not, you'll have good info on what you need, etc. Go quality...not cheap.

Since she is just gtting into it, you could try Amazon. My daughter wanted an acoustic but mioney is just extremely tight. I got one on Amazon for $16. I saw the same one somewhere else for $68 so I guess I got a good deal.. It is not a super great guitar but good for learning the notes and strings and care. The strings are not steel which supposedly creates the best sound. I don't know 3/4 or 4/4 but it is a "standard size" guitar and she uses it for now. Later, we will get her the real deal.

Please consider going to a good guitar shop with your daughter and asking them which size to look into. Perhaps then you will know what to look for on eBay or craigslist.

I would go to a pawn shop or try to rent one from a music store. I wish I had after buying one plus an amplifier to have my son drop out 2 weeks later. I hope this helps you save some money.

We never go to a pawn shop, but my BIL was visiting while we were looking for an amp. He wanted to check one before we bought new. My H and him found 2 great amps for what we could have bought one for. Get advise from retail but check out the pawn shops before you buy. Times are hard and pawn shops are full.
