We don't use softener for that exact same thing. Several of my older kids get this each time softener is used. Take Benadryl and put hydrocortisone cream on it. Get some clothes on him that don't have fabric softener on it.
Kid has been itching since yesterday, seems to get worse at night. He has itchy tiny pin point bumps on his chin, cheeks and chest/back. he has been scratching his face a lot today. I just started using fabric softener again after about 7 months of not using it. it is not free softener and in the past when my son was A. infant he seemed to react to softener (why i stopped using it besides all the chemicals in it). My husb does not think it is the softener. I am taking him to doc tomorrow. Is there anything I can do to help soothe him until them. I have aquaphor and winnie the pooh naturals lotion.
Thanks so much.
eta: if you have had a problem with the fabric softner before does my situation sound familiar? do you think the softener would make him have a general reaction with bumps everywhere or a contact reaction with just bumps where the clothes touch?

Try some Benadryl until you can get it checked out. It does sound like the softener. Usually, you try to rule out all the new things that have been introduced into the home, and it sounds like this may be it, to me. Also, is your son on antibiotics? My kids all have allergies to any derivative to Penicillin and break out into a "Penicillin rash" if they have anything made of the medicine. In any case, Benadryl until the appointment and re-wash the laundry that you used the softener in.
Best of luck!!
I think I would wash off the lotion and let his poor little skin breathe.
My granddaughter can use Downy but none of the others. They break her out in a rash on her chest and neck. So we only use Downy.
Just Google Search "allergies to fabric softener."
These things, causes a lot of problems for some people. And dryer sheets too. It is toxic.
I have never used fabric softener. Honestly, I don't find any use for it or any point to it. But I have used dryer sheets to repel bugs.
There are other natural ways to soften laundry, like vinegar etc.
Rashes/Hives... can arise from things that are ingested, OR topical/irritant types. This is per our Pediatrician.
That sounds exactly like the reactions we have in our house to anything washed with fabric softener, fragrance & dye detergent and/or dryer sheets. That's why I use nothing but dye and fragrance free detergent, vinegar in the wash load and tennis balls in the dryer and a lot less detergent than the bottles claim you need.
I would give him A. antihistimine for the allergic reaction.
