Iud - Coppell,TX

I got an IUD on friday and had a horrible reaction. My blood pressure dropped and I hyperventilated not to mention the horrible cramps. I am a pretty tough cookie and can handle pain but I did not expect it with the IUD. I am still having cramping. It isn't excruciating but it is very uncomfortable. Has anyone else had this happen upon IUD placement? I am wondering if this cramping and all around icky feeling will go away or if I need to have it removed. Thanks.

What can I do next?

I got my first IUD many years ago and I remember having the same initial reaction to it. The very painful cramping and extremely heavy periods in the beginning. It will get better. I had two IUDs in a row until it interfered with my then-boyfriend, now husband, so I had to switch to an alternative method. I'm using Nuvaring now, can only recommend it. But if I could, I'd still go with an IUD again.

no thats not normal, i have the iud and had normal cramping for about 3 wks and a month of light period (irregular) maybe even 2mos. thats normal though. nurse said any longer w/ my sypmtoms then to take it out. but your symptoms or ovbiously alot worse. So i am suprised that your dr. hasnt said to take it out or try something else. and if your blood pressure drops and you started hyperventitating you should take it out. i would say that your dr. put it in wrong and maybe it needs to be moved to the right place but b/c you have those symptoms i am just going to say the iud is just not for you.

Hey K.,

When I had mine put in, i cramped also. I called my Dr and they said it was normal. They did have me come in so they could check the position of it. Apparently, on rare occasions it can move a little once its in. Mine was fine and the cramping went away within a week. Now everything is awesome!!!!!

You might be safe and call the Dr. The blood pressure sounds unusual to me. I never saw that reaction when I did my research on the side effects. BUT I AM NO DR..

Good luck, God Bless

Jenn

I have had 2 IUD's put in. With the first one, I had the same reaction that you described. The second one, last Monday, didn't hurt nearly as bad (they used lidocaine). I am having some cramping as well, which the dr said should go away in the first two weeks. Check your strings to make sure it is where it is supposed to be, and make sure you follow up with the Dr in about 12 weeks. I hope it gets better for you soon.

Hmm, I've had mine for about 9 months and never had the low blood pressure reaction, or the hyperventilation, but when I had it placed, it hurt for about 2 weeks, just a dull pain mostly. And after about 3 months I barely had a period at all. Maybe one or two tampons per month, can't beat that! =)

I have had an IUD for about 4 years now. I can remember when it was inserted, it was painful. I had terrible cramps off and on for about a week. I then spotted off and on for about 3 months. After the cramping stopped, it was much better. Also as a side note, some Drs will tell you that it is most likely your periods will stop all together. Mine never did. Some months are a much lighter flow but I still have a period. In my opinion it is still a much better choice for me than the Pill. Good luck. I hope it gets better for you.

I had the mirena done. At first, I had cramping and soreness and bleeding. It was a shocker for me because I may have had cramps prior to the implant once every couple of years. But, nearly a year later, I don't regret those first couple of weeks.

Everyones body is different, but I would make sure to talk to the doctor about this. I was warned how painful it would be, and sat right up and was ready to go when they were done. It hurt less than my incredibly painful periods. Taking it out was when I had the pain, which they told me was a breeze. (apparently I'm all backwards) I also continued to have mild periods for the 3 years I had it in, with no cramping. It was like heaven compared to before I had it in. I haven't heard of anyone experiencing pain for a prolonged time afterwards, but like I said everyone is different. I would get it checked out to be safe though.

I got the IUD 6 weeks after my 2nd child and actually had no problems with it, except for my period being completely off schedule (spotting a lot, etc) for the first couple years. No real pain, and just minor cramping. This has been the experience of everyone that has received the IUD within 2 months of giving birth. HOWEVER - everyone that I have spoken to about getting the IUD NOT having just given birth to a baby says it is a really painful experience and that they cramped and felt sharp pains for at least a month until their bodies got used to it. I am sure you a just fine, but I would keep the doctor informed just in case. I am sorry you are in pain... My advice is to tough it out for a month and see if the pain goes away. If it works for you, you will LOVE IT!!! Now I have a light period for about three days a month, and we can be spontanious!! It has really worked well for us.

Good luck!

The way your body is reacting is your best advice. Get it out of there. Birth control is progestins and estrogens that are synthetic. The progestins molecular structure is closer to testosterone than progesterone that your body produces when you ovulate. By suppressing your ovulation, you are adding to your chances of female cancers that are caused by estrogen that is unopposed by the progesterone. Dr. Oz on Oprah has talked on natural, bio-identical hormone use, such as USP Progesterone, to solve a miriad of health problems. Prolief progesterone hormone balancing cream by Arbonne has a metered pump that makes is super easy to use. I'd be happy to help you get it at a discount.

If you are looking for a safe alternative, my hubby and I went to classes for Natural Family Planning. www.ccli.org is a great resource. The classes were cheap and so helpful. As a cancer survivor, knowing what I know now, I will never go back on birth control.

Now that I don't have the mood swings, bloating, weight gain and cramps that came with birth control, my hubby is glad we made the switch! And the progesterone cream makes my cycles more predictable, even while nursing my 7 mo. old.

It is so sad that doctors don't know to help you find alternatives. The money from pharmaceutical companies controls the flow of information. My ob/gyn is great at looking for natural means first before prescribing a class one carcinogen to a perfectly healthy woman. Joe Behan at Dallas Presby.

I have an IUD, too. But I got non of those reactions, on me nothing happen it was a simple procedure and off I went like nothing. You should be having a sonogram to check the IUD if its in place, I think its a week after, I am not sure. So when you go back to see the doctor ask question? hope everything turns out ok.

I did have almost the same reaction of faint and anxiousness and cramping. I think that I was thinking a little too much about the procedure. I too had cramping for about 1 week. Here I am 4 years later and love the IUD. I have the non-hormone one, but I forget its name.
