Hello J., yor choice gotta be the paraguard hands down! I have had it for now 11yrs. I just had the reincertion this past february, I have not had any compications mo more than the first few months a bleed a little heavy. However no cramping anf nothing I could not handle. I can not take anything with hormones because of past health issues and they no longer exsist. The old IUD's of the past(1960's-70's problem was simply the string now they have redone the IUD in copper and there has been no more issues with them. I am so pleased that I did it for the second time and this should carry me through menopause. I did not want to permently tie my tudes so this was the next best thing. Trust me this is a wonderful option for birth control.

I also choose Paraguard because it was hormone free and love it.

I had some cramping at insertion and with my first few periods following that. And the first 3-5 periods were heavier then normal. However now (after almost a year) they are back to normal, if not lighter and a little shorter.

You can see other responses to this same question if you want more in the requests and responses section... this question has been a popular one in the last 2 weeks! Good luck with your decision but this is how I responded to a previous inquirer:
So worth it, I don't even know when I have my period anymore. My insurance covered it, so look into it. The first couple months I had heavier cramps during my period and was uncomfortable with light crampy-type pain the week before and after. It went away quick and so worth it. I've had Mirena for over a year now and it has made life so much simpler. As far as weight gain...I weigh less now than I did taking the pill BEFORE having any kids. I don't even know when I have my period because it is a little spotting and a pantyliner is all that is required... YEA no more bulky pads and tampons!
Oh yeah, and my OB/GYN uses it herself...

Hi J.,
I have the Paragard IUD and have had it for 2 years. I chose this one because I did not want any hormones.

I love it! It was essentially pain free going in (although I hear that is not the norm, most people say some cramping is experienced).

This one can stay in for 10 years.

Nothing to think about, nothing to remember to take, just a little "string check" once a month and we're all good.

The only complaint I had was really HEAVY period for about 3 or 4 months once I got my period (I had it put in 6 weeks after my 2nd child was born and breastfed so I didn't get my period until almost a year later), but they went back to "normal." Things have been just fine ever since.

I know some people who have the mirena and they have said that they stopped getting a period with that one.

Hope this helps,
B.

I was looking into both of them and then one of my girlfriends reminded me that the whole point of an IUD is to destroy a developing zygote. While I was more in favor of the one with no hormones, I decided to look into other options because of my own personal beliefs. Just in case you hadn't thought about it.

I had the Mirena IUD "put in place" approx. one year ago. My doctor is wonderful and has plenty of experience however the insertion process was the worst of the worst. Extremely painful. I had it removed in Feb '08 for personal reasons but was glad it was out; removing it was a breeze. I would not recommend it.

I have the Mirena and I LOVE it. I had it put in about 6 weeks after giving birth to my first daughter. I have not had any weight gain and my fiancee hasn't noticed any changes in mood or anything. In the beginning I was bleeding for about 2 weeks straight but it wasn't heavy or anything like that. More of an annoyance. I've had it for about 3 or 4 months now and have gotten my period only 1 time since the 2 week period ended. Yes this one is only good for 5 years but still worth it! Good Luck!

I have the paragard Iud. I don't react well to a change in my hormones, that's why I chose it. The insertion process is not pleasant, but is over quickly. I didn't realize that I was going to have to take anti-biotics after and ended up with a bladder infection, but that was taken care of. The first week or two is uncomforable at times, but worth it. Haven't thought about it much since. I bleed a little more heavily during my period, but I just got it in July. I used to have really bad cramping during my period and that is pretty much gone. I love it. No hormones, no pills, no messy insertion stuff (that never works as easily as they say it does). I've tried everything else out there for birth control and paragard is the only one that has worked for me. And at any point in time, if we decide to have another it's no big deal to have it taken out.

I had the paraguard put in place almost a year ago. I liked it because I am 28 and didn't want to get to through it every 5 years with the mirena, if we decide not to have more kids. Plus the paraguard is hormone free! I had a little cramping (Like a period) at insertion, but nothing to bad. I love not having to deal with birth control anymore.

I have had Mirena since last March. I love it. I have had no problems and my periods have been lighter and almost non-existent. I still get some of my symptoms (I get migraines associated with hormones), but that is okay given the birth control. There is nothing to mess with. Thanks and good luck.

I don't know anything about the copper iud, but I just got my second mirena. I had the first one put in after the birth of our first daughter and had it for 3 1/2 years. When I had it removed it took us about 4 months to get pregnant with our second daughter. Now that she has arrived, I have had another mirena put in. I found it to be very convenient with very little side effects. I didn't have any weight gain, it didn't increase menstrual cramps and it made my monthly cycle very very light. The only drawback was it made my cycle last for almost 9 days. I have friends who have said that using the mirena made their cycle go away completely. The insertion is a little bit painful, but not much worse than a regular yearly exam. Hope this info helps!
