I need your opinions please. I went to the Dr. last Thursday with what I thought was IUD issues (I have the Mirena and had it placed May 07); lower abdominal pain, breast pain and soreness, acne, and unable to feel the strings. My dr couldn't feel the strings either, so he preformed a sonogram to check and see if it was still in there. It was, he also checked for cysts on my ovaries but everything looked good. He sent me for some blood test (which haven't come back yet)to check for a number of things. He I believe is also checking for pregnancy as he couldn't see anything on the sonogram. Here is what I have to decide. He said that more than likely it is just a hormone imbalance and that I could either try and have the IUD taken out and start on oral BC or I could leave the IUD in but still start oral BC for the hormones it provides. I really have no clue which route I want to go. I have to decide by Friday morning, that is when I have my yearly appt with the same Dr. Any opinions or advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you all for your advise. I went to the dr this morning and he again couldn't fine the strings so I'm going to have it surgically removed now. Wow that is $400 I didn't want to spend. So beware if you can't find your strings PLEASE PLEASE go to the dr right away and have them found or have it removed.
Pregnancy is a possibility. My niece got pregnant while using an IUD and now has an adorable 2 year old daughter.

I would suggest having it taken out. It can be a great BC but there could be a lot of complications with living it in without a string. It could always move into your Wall lining later and you'd never know! What's the point of leaving it in anyways if you have to take Oral BC either way? It would be a great piece of mind for you in the long run to have it taken out, I believe, because your worried about it to start with. Best of Luck to you!

I had an IUD about 9 years ago, and I loved it. I personally would want to know where it was, first. Now, I am 40 years old and have 4 children, my youngest is 5. I have all of your other symptoms except the abdominal pain. I contribute a lot of mine to hormones and stress. Wait and see what the dr. says about the tests, too. Hang in there.
I had everything but the acne, and it went away within 2 weeks of having Mirena pulled - no bcp's needed. Sex also hurt like a sonofagun, both during and for the next 24-48 hours.
If you WANT to keep it, you could always try just the pills first - then if you're still having the complications, you could have it pulled.
Funny - I lasted 9 months with my Mirena too.
I would have it taken out, sounds like alot of issue's with it ! change to the shot ! thats what I did and had no side-effects either ! all was good !

The question now is how can you get your hormones back on track so you will not have to rely on the BC each day? If you decide to get rid of the IUD I would recommend NuvaRing, you insert a new ring once a month and I have not had any side effects. (NuvaRing.com)

I will just tell you my experience with an IUD and hopefully that will help you to decide. I had an IUD a couple of months after I had my last son. It cause a low grade chronic infection. I kept having abdominal pain and other symptoms but no matter how many times I went to the doctor, he couldn't find anything wrong with me. I was beginning to think I was crazy. After over 3 years of this, I finally found a doctor that found the problem. I ended up having to have a complete hysterectomy at age 30 due to this. I am not saying that you will have the same problem but do not just let the problem linger. I almost died due to the long term chronic infection. Good luck!
I had an IUD (Mirena) placed after having my second son. It was worse than having a baby. The doctor had trouble placing it. After that, the strings disappeared... so did the IUD. It was discovered missing after I went in due to lower abdominal pain. They did find ovarian cysts, but those later disappeared after switching to an oral bc. I still have lower abdominal pain, most likely associated around my menstrual cycle. I even had a hysteroscopy (July 2007)done to find out the cause. They did find some scar tissue, but really no definitive answer. The pain has lessened and I just live with it. Some menstrual cycles are worse than others, but managable.
Personally, I would never recommend an IUD to anyone, but it's different for everyone. I use Yasmin (oral bc) and its always been reliable for me.

This sounds like my life! I was going through the SAMETHING wih my Mirena also. My doctor too gave me those options. I got mine put in July 07. I started having the same issues and chose to take the BC on top of the Mirena. I did that for about a month just to level the hormones and i feel wonderful. I am really glad that i chose this route. Once the levels are nornal you won't need the BC. They say it takes at least 6 months before it starts working right so why not keep it and try to make it work. Good luck.
I would have the IUD removed. There are so many negative side effects with the Mirena that I actually decided to stick with birth control. There is a class action lawsuit right now over the Mirena. Just my two cents....
My 2 cents - I happen to be someone who has the Mirena and loves it. But if I were going through what you are, I would have that puppy yanked out! Good luck with whatever you decide and God bless!
